Think smoking is bad? I loved Craven "A"s and Rothmans back in the eighties with authentic cubano espresso myself. Then mountain biking got in the way of my tobacco, sort of. edmspeedmaster's thread pretty much nails the argument against smoking. I would add that the taste bud epiphany-effect is a bonus not to be overlooked. A new 50 year threat is among us. GMOs. Genetically Modified Organisms. "According to a new study, low doses of the Bt biopesticide CryA1b, and the glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup, kill human kidney cells. Glyphosate at 57.2 parts per million -- 200 times below agricultural use – killed half the cells." Yep, the Bt strains of biopesticides are genetically engineered into our crops. Right now we have 8 crops. Corn, Soybeans, Canola, Cottonseed, Sugar Beets, Hawaiian Papaya, and to a lesser extent and my dismay: Zucchini, and Yellow Squash. To further complicate things, our livestock is fed these GMO crops. Heck the cows have rbGH or rbST. Rules of thumb exist about what to look for in these brave new world supermarkets. The simplest is don't purchase anything from a supermarket that is not located on the exterior walls. Perimeter shopping. Then we get into reading labels. I'll leave it to those that care about GMOs to do their own research. (Boring stuff really) Boring? well when taken in light of the horrors of cigarette smoking, can thoughts of brain formaldehyde (aspartame) be boring? 1999 found the Europeans tipping the scales in favor of banning GMO crops due to media reporting the risks of GM foods. I have read tons about the risks on our domestic news networks: Not. What can be done? Much on the order of smoking cessation, changing dietary habits are difficult. Take small steps. Read these two guides. Non-GMO Shopping Guide NON-GMO Shopping Tips

Been aware of GMOs and Monsanto for a long time now and have steered away with EVERYTHING I eat. My choice helps me, helps the planet and future generations. It's time to turn this food thing around and protest by means of refusal.
Btw... did you know Monsanto bought Blackwater? Why would a food company need a private army, I wonder. Hmmmm!

Agent Orange was Monsanto. They have made money on war for decades now. Just like DuPont. Chemical companies make chemicals and the defense industry pays big for them. They don't own Blackwater though. They own a lot of stuff, I may be wrong. GMOs help to feed a starving world. Chemicals that have been banned because of fear can have a reverse effect. Malaria was all but gone thanks to DDT. Now, it is making a comeback. Agent Orange was a mixing error, (Round Up) works very well. Again Monsanto became the evil monster that killed our troops. Remember the miracle of Asbestos? Won't wear out, won't burn , mold into any shape, insulate with it, etc. etc. Mistakes will happen. If we had to study things for 50 years before we used them they would be obsolete before production could begin. There are those that need a few acres, a horse and some hand tools. Everything else is way too dangerous to handle. All natural farming in the 21st century cannot produce enough to feed the world. I choose the science. I am glad the foods are enhanced. I am glad they generally don't have all natural e coli in them etc. I am very happy we can produce 30% more per acre of certain crops to ensure people eat. This is a like a Global warming discussion though. There is no consensus of science on it to my knowledge.

There is probably no one living in America today that hasn't grown up on GM food stuffs. Science have been GMing for a couple 100 years in one way or the other.
Saxtron is right advances in food production has saved millions of lives, lives that have been at a higher standard of living than their ancestors.
On the other hand a book not based on science got DDT banned We in the USA don't have a Malaria problem because of DDT, we had a sever problem before DDT. Southern Europe did too and reports are that it is coming back. Will they use DDT, it's banned. Will they use the "sustainable" method we have forced on Africa, mosquito nets at night. Western enlightenment has condemned millions in Africa.
No risk equals no progress or freedom.

Seen a documentary on Monsanto. Theres something wrong with being able to patent a soybean and put people in jail for keeping the seeds from those plants.

The first genetically engineered organism was in 1973. The GMO didn't hit our foodstuffs until 1992: Calgene's Favr Savr tomato.
"The most common GMO in food on the market today is genetically modified soy, with 75-80% of American soy crops grown from genetically modified seeds (11); Roundup Ready Soybeans engineered by the Monsanto corporation are the most common variety. These soybeans are genetically modified to withstand the effects of Roundup herbicide; weeds and other undesirable plants are eradicated while the Roundup Ready Soybeans are unaffected. "
Sounds like Bhopal and Union Carbide all over again except on an insidious time line. Hear hear to the soylent green crowd. It is food after all? Or do we really care about what we eat after all?

I stand corrected, I was thinking hybrids. But Bhopal?, that was a manufacturing accident, a rupture gas holding tank. One must consider that a lot of this banning of GM food has to do with internal economic interest of the banning country. Many of the studies against GM seems to be proven lacking in control. Many involved in the debate seem to really think that there is already enough food being produced world wide to produce optimal population sustainability. I love that word, sustainability, it usually means no progress or worse. Note that ISIS is controlled by 2 people and if you want to actually read the above lined study you have to pay for it. Sort of like if you want to plant Monsanto's seed you have to pay for it. I guess we will know in 50 years. You folks have every right to be vigilant in what you eat and vote with your wallet.

I dunno...maybe it's me just being the old tightwad in these tough economic times, tryin to save a buck where I can ya know. Maybe I notice a difference in taste and definiately nutritional value from store bought vegtables...
But I've gotten into veggie gardening, totally organic...with non-hybrib/ non GMO seeds in the last couple of years. Saved my self a ton of cash on fresh veggies from the market just by puttin in a little sweat and growing my own. Phineas Freak was right...when times get tough grow yer own! GMO's have got to go since the nutritional / dietary effects on the human physiology are so questionable!

No doubt, growing one's own food or hunting for meat has a prideful and redemptive quality, like wrenching on one's own bike. But, in an advanced society, crop failure or being a bad shot doesn't mean starvation, we got back up. I have a garden, I grow tomato's, to eat with BACON! That ton of Bacon we eat at my house most likely does more harm to my body than GMO foods could ever accomplish.

...Bhopal?, that was a manufacturing accident, a rupture gas holding tank...
More likely an act of sabotage as "An independent investigation by the engineering consulting firm Arthur D. Little determined that the water could only have been deliberately introduced into the tank, since safety systems were in place and operational that would have prevented water from entering the tank by accident." *
Water? "a large volume of water had apparently been introduced into the methyl isocyanate tank and caused a chemical reaction that forced the chemical release valve to open and allowed the gas to leak." *
Union Carbide provided interim relief, but it took the Indian Supreme Court almost 5 years until February of 1989 to reach a settlement with Union Carbide. I drew the analogy between Union Carbide and Monsanto in order to emphasize the difference in long term effects of Chemical Corporations bad planning. Union Carbide's derelict planning had immediate effects: 3800 folks perished, all at the same time. What Monsanto is doing is not going to kill thousands up front or at the same time. Instead, Monsanto is spreading the death across generations. Creating food allergies in unforeseen ways. Loading up both us and our reservoirs with poison. Creating a demand for more and more chemicals. Recently soy crops have begun to be attacked by the very insects the Bt toxins (Genetically engineered into the soy crops) where designed to kill. Much as antibiotics have created a whole host of resistance bacteria, so will Monsanto's liberal use both of the Bt toxins and Round up do for insects and weeds. (Yes, many weeds are now resistant to Round up).
The benefits of these brave new world feats are amazing. Feed the world! Engineer vitamins and such into the limited food supplies of third world countries. Bravo. Unfortunately, the gains realized wane over time. Not only do the benefits wane, but the environmental damages wax. Thus the insidious nature of Monsanto's work.
Dr. Mercola's take on Monsanto "Today, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could rightfully be accused of being a “subsidiary" of the Monsanto Company. When you realize just how many Monsanto executives and employees who have migrated into positions of power within the FDA and other government agencies, a truly disturbing picture emerges of the foxes guarding the henhouse." His voice is not alone. Much like former Congressman who turn into either lobbyist or corporate execs for the purpose of exerting influence contrary to our pursuit of happiness, so too do former chemical execs go to work for the FDA.

Europe's citizenry was who banned GMO products. The government fully approved GMO products for sale. When the citizenry stopped buying those products the Corporate giants stopped formulating their products for sale in Europe with GMOs. Those same companies did not reformulate their products for our markets. Citizens have a voice: Those who speak and make their position known either by voice of the written word or (more concise as it hits the coffers hard) the voice of boycott.

If you only knew about the lack of double bind studies by Monsanto! Many claims are made that the research refuting the claimed goodness of GMOs is lacking. However, repudiations are being made regarding the research that allowed market introduction! Again, the insidious actions of Monsanto are apparent: "Your research is bad! Therefore ours is good!" lol. Who are they kidding?
No worries. Much like our ability to smoke fags, choosing what we eat is still our choice...at least for now.

I suppose I should quit smoking, drinking, maste... (well, let's skip that one), GMO's, sat.fat, soda, etc. No, on second thought, if I can survive breathing the air, I should be able to survive the rest. If I pass ten years earlier into my Alzheimer's phase, that will be ok.

Been wondering about this kind of stuff too Moe, especially since our oldest son was diagnosed with Noonans Syndrome and Autism several years back. This despite a perfect pregnancy by my wife, no smoking, drinking, all the neo-natal stuff just fine, normal delivery, etc..., and no family history on either side. What is particularly alarming is the DRAMATIC increase in the rates of diagnosis, which was something like 1:150 kids about 2 years ago and is now 1:88 kids. I realize the detection methods are getting better, but one would think that would rule out other illnesses incorrectly classified as autism a few years back, if it wasn't as widespread as it seems to be. Even more interesting, is that I can find NO reference to statistics in the EU for autism rates, almost no information whatsoever. I found one link mentioning "hundreds of families in the UK", but that doesn't work out to much of a percentage rate at all compared to 1 kid in 88 here in this country. Vaccines seem to be ruled out now, but what about GM foods? How about the explosion of food-related allergies. When growing up there was never any concern about things such as peanuts being near food, now every single restaurant has warnings if they are even in the building and in the schools such as where my wife works in the cafeteria, they are fanatic about letting any peanut products into the kitchen area.

Unfortunately it is not only GMO issues but chemical issues as well. there are no safe alternative sweeteners. Seem to love this word: Insidious. The very sweeteners that exist to solve the weight problem actually increase one's craving for carbohydrates. Sugar is better for us, just make sure it is cane sugar not beet sugar as sugar beets are GMO crops. " Aspartame Is, by Far, the Most Dangerous Substance on the Market That is Added to Foods It hides behind brand names such as NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure, but its makers cannot mask the fact that it accounts for 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA."

I agree with you on Aspartame. They got it into the food supply with research on specific foods. They never did an in depth study on what it did when dissolved into solution like coffee, Ice Tea etc. That stuff scares me a little. And its in everything!

I've gone back to sugar and milk with my coffee, used to use aspartame and then splenda, but sugar is fine. And I have to laugh at all of the fat free foods and artificial sweeteners in our foods in this country, which is rather ironic given all of the overweight people in America and the booming dental industry. When I used to go to Germany a few years back all of the time, the food was made with whole cremes, sugar, etc.... the way it used to be here 40 years ago or so, and very few overweight people. Granted, a LOT of people get out and walk places, are active, bicycle, drink wheat beers, bicycle, drink pilsner beers, walk, drink bock beers, and so on, so maybe that's it. Lots of excercise and "stuff"....

There`s a direct correlation between Aspartame (also known as Spenda, NutraSweet, Equal, Benevia, etc) consumption and weight GAIN. It`s a serious poison.

There is an even larger direct correlation between over eating and weight gain. By over eating I mean sugars and carbohydrates.

Keith, I think Splenda is a different sweetener than Aspartame, and is made from Sucralose, Maltodextrin and dextrose. Not saying it's any better, but it does not contain aspartame. Funny thing when reading about this is how insignificant these sweeteners are when it comes to reducing caloric intake. Something on the order of 3-6 calories reduction for 10 grams of this stuff versus the same weight of sugar.

Everyone needs to do their own research.
I’ve been studying this subject (Food, nutrition ,exercise, hormones) for 2 years. I made major dietary changes 18 months ago and added simple exercise into my day. The day before I embarked on this journey of changes I had a Physical exam done with a full blood work up. I won’t bore you with numbers, but all data points were well in the ‘negative’ health impact end of the scale.
Jan 1 2011 I cleaned up my food. Eating organic when I can, search out nutritionally dense in season fruits, nuts, beans, and vegetables, minimize red meat intake and choose organic meats when able. Stay away from sugar as much as possible, and avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague. Eat 3 meals a day and snack on healthy food.
Just last week I had a blood work up done. ALL data points are now well in the normal and safe range. Several data sets are actually in the ‘positive’ health impact range. Blood pressure 108/68 and resting heart rate of 45.
To me most interestingly is the following factoids: 1: I have not had a cold or the flu since January 2011. 2: I used to have wicked spring allergies. We are in full bloom here. Grass, tree, weed pollen moderate to high. Not one sniffle, sneeze. Not once have I needed to take an allergy pill. 3: I sleep better, and through the entire night.
The most significant changes I’ve made have been dietary. I’m am completely convinced there is something wrong with the food supplied by the institutional food system in this country. Maybe not all of it, but way to much of it. Our country is dying an obese diabetics death, and it’s directly related to the food system in this country which is bastardizing its genetic makeup via GMO’s and poisoning it with pesticides, preventives, and artificial sweeteners. You can’t research this stuff and come to any other conclusion. Everyone owes it to themselves to look into this stuff.
Forget about counting on the ‘Government’ or some ‘agency’ to assure and protect your ‘food’ supply. We are on our own.
Did I say to much? Was that my inside voice?
Where can I put this soap box? I'm done now.

Important distinction to make. GM in itself isn’t bad or good, it’s just a way to modified food genetically rather than other conventional way like we’re used to. Nobodies complaining about seedless oranges and grapes or crossed breathing fruits, dogs and humans. It is how we use these technics that makes it right or wrong. To introduce harmful chemicals through GM process makes the people behind the decision wrong, not the process. If a guy gets drunk, rides his Triumph and kill someone in the process, that doesn't make riding Triumph a bad thing. I use peacefully the same technologies everyday that others uses to harm others. GM is not bad or good. Just like the great invention of a screw driver to help fix your bike, or to punch it in the ignition to steal your bike. Ah! Now I get your attention.

"Splenda bears more chemical similarity to DDT than it does to sugar"
"There is no question that sucralose starts off as a sugar molecule, it is what goes on in the factory that is concerning. Sucralose is a synthetic chemical that was originally cooked up in a laboratory. In the five step patented process of making sucralose, three chlorine molecules are added to a sucrose or sugar molecule. A sucrose molecule is a disaccharide that contains two single sugars bound together; glucose and fructose.
The chemical process to make sucralose alters the chemical composition of the sugar so much that it is somehow converted to a fructo-galactose molecule. This type of sugar molecule does not occur in nature and therefore your body does not possess the ability to properly metabolize it. As a result of this "unique" biochemical make-up, McNeil Nutritionals makes its claim that Splenda is not digested or metabolized by the body, making it have zero calories."

Thanks Moe, had seen this. They also get away with calling it zero calories by keeping the serving size at 0.5grams, which keeps it as something like 0.4 calories or such whereby it is considered "zero" calories by the FDA....
