Think smoking is bad? I loved Craven "A"s and Rothmans back in the eighties with authentic cubano espresso myself. Then mountain biking got in the way of my tobacco, sort of. edmspeedmaster's
thread pretty much nails the argument against smoking. I would add that the taste bud epiphany-effect is a bonus not to be overlooked.
A new 50 year threat is among us. GMOs. Genetically Modified Organisms.
"According to
a new study, low doses of the Bt biopesticide CryA1b, and the glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup, kill human kidney cells. Glyphosate at 57.2 parts per million -- 200 times below agricultural use – killed half the cells."
Yep, the Bt strains of biopesticides are genetically engineered into our crops. Right now we have 8 crops. Corn, Soybeans, Canola, Cottonseed, Sugar Beets, Hawaiian Papaya, and to a lesser extent and my dismay: Zucchini, and Yellow Squash. To further complicate things, our livestock is fed these GMO crops. Heck the cows have rbGH or rbST. Rules of thumb exist about what to look for in these brave new world supermarkets. The simplest is don't purchase anything from a supermarket that is not located on the exterior walls. Perimeter shopping. Then we get into reading labels. I'll leave it to those that care about GMOs to do their own research. (Boring stuff really) Boring? well when taken in light of the horrors of cigarette smoking, can thoughts of brain formaldehyde (aspartame) be boring?
1999 found the Europeans
tipping the scales in favor of banning GMO crops due to media reporting the risks of GM foods. I have read tons about the risks on our domestic news networks: Not.
What can be done? Much on the order of smoking cessation, changing dietary habits are difficult. Take small steps. Read these two guides.
