I was a heavy smoker for 35 years. I loved smoking. Loved the hit. I gave up 6 years ago by switching to gum and I was on gum for 3 years! I was still getting all the nicotine for those 3 years but it gave my lungs a chance to heal and recover and it broke the physical hand ritual. I then switched to Eclipse gum (powerful mint) which still gave the sensation of a hit to the lungs with no nicotine.
I big psychological step for me was to remember my identity BEFORE I started smoking - because smoking seemed to be part of me part of my identity. Remembering that there was a time when I was complete without it helped.
My point is ... everyone may have a different method of quitting. Don't give up quitting - it doesn't matter how long it takes.
