You really believe that Windows machines will be infected if they get on the internet?

Say 'hi' to 1998 for me.

Nope. Can't afford another Sasser worm either. So, no web.

Well, let's all pile in the Pinto and hit the road. You're hilarious.

This is exactly the type of thinking that I envisioned when I talked about people who use Macs not being computer literate. Rather, one has to be a bit more computer literate in order to use a Windows based computer.

Here, we have a person who knows how to use the applications. He knows how to use his Mac to do exactly what he needs to do and no more. Whereas there is great proficiency in using the application, there's very little computer literacy. Instead of identifying, understanding and weighing the risks and taking the necessary steps to minimize the risks, he takes a categorical stance, which is due to lack of understanding about how computers work. So, the decisions are made based on irrational fears, rather than risk/benefit analysis.

More people who use macs tend to fall into this category. This means that they pay more for a system that shields them from their irrational fears and provides somewhat greater safety and stability at the cost of limiting their computing experience.

Bingo. My son is an engineer with a Fortune 500 tech firm. He says that the opinion of engineers in general is that Macs are for people who don't know how to use computers. He can't imagine a big outfit trying to use Macs as they are for a niche community and they just aren't compatible or flexible enough for an international company.

I haven't had a computer crash this millennium and I've got 7 of them of every shape and size. Haven't seen a virus in a decade and they are all network and on the net full time. Malware has never made it to any of my Win 7 machines and really hasn't been a problem since XP rolled out.

I know you want to justify paying too much for your computer but the things you suggest just don't happen.

This has been my experience too, as I said before I liked the Mac I had but for the money and ease of programs that run on my machine I'll go PC. (haven't had a Mac in a long time so this may have changed) Last time I shopped for a Mac I bought a PC for $1800 because a lesser Mac was $3,000.I say choose the one that works best for you, that is what matters. I like my PC but I liked my Mac too, better in fact, since it was more user friendly. I have gotten to know PCs in and out and am currently learning my new Windows 7 machine. I don't like the interface of 7 so far and find much of it hard to read, it was made for someone with good eyesight, it seems all the print is much smaller than XP was.I have to hold ctrl and use my scroll wheel to make stuff bigger. getting old sucks.

EDIT: When I said lesser Mac above I wasn't speaking of quality I was speaking in terms of what it would do and what I would get for the given money. $3,000 for the Mac at the time and it wouldn't do everything I wanted $1,800 for the PC and it did everything I wanted plus more. That was the machine I just replaced and this new one doesn't really seem much better about the same with more storage.

In the last decade there have been 6 versions of windows. Windows 2000 (probably the best job they ever did) up to Windows 7.

In the same period Apple has put out 9 versions now we are on drunken master snow mountain lion 3 :-)

All the versions from the two companies are for two reasons. The first is to fix the bad coding they did then the bad patches they laid over to replace the bad coding. The 2nd is to keep digging deeper into our pockets.

My day involves
Email
Word
Watching Video
PDFs
Copy, paste
Forum
Web browsing
Spread sheets sometime.

I think I am very typical. I could still do that with Mandrake 8.0. My point being is nearly none of us even approach the computing capabilities of either a MAC or Win7 machine. Its really about bigger better best branding.

I don't need to be super literate about computers any more than I need to be able to rebuild my big screen TV. They are tools, you just need to know what button to push.

The evolution of Visual Basic from OS2 (IBM) the most stable windows ever written IMHO. They all do the same thing. Click a picture of a button and it sends a line of code.

I typed this on a PC the same way I would type this on a Linux box or a Mac. Not a single soul in this thread can see the windows logo or an apple embedded in the letters. It all works just fine.

That is why I shop price.

There're literally tens of thousands of people making a very good living fixing what goes wrong with computers. Debugging them, replacing the hopelessly corrupted hard drive etc. I use XP on my point of sale computers, last year one of my guys used one of them to help a customer find an address by going to a companies website. We got a hostage ware that would not allow us to use the computer. After two attempts to fix it my computer guys punted and we needed to get a new hard drive and load the saved data.

I have two customers who make a living getting people's computers running again. Any guesses as to what percentage are PC's?

The point I made comparing PC/Mac and Ural/Triumph was aimed at those who act as if they are somehow more "computer literate" because they use Windows. Hey guys. you're using WINDOWS! That is Microsoft's copy of the Mac OS! I use both, they're not that different from each other. They were not meant to be, that's why Bill Gates copied the Mac OS in the first place. The idea that Windows users are somehow more advanced than Mac users is simply a baseless conceit similar to those Harley riders who look down their noses at everyone else. If you're serious about being a computer geek you'd be using DOS instead of Windows.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Apple's market share is about 10-11%. So yeah, there will be more PCs being repaired.

I use PC because I get more bang for my buck. AV and malwarebytes are pretty seamless and work well. Never bothered by the updating and I schedule the scans for while I'm asleep.

My new windows 7 machine is sweet.

I am not sure Apple OS is about 10% Bill. Remember for Apple they have bundled Boot Camp since 2006 or so. There are a huge number of Mac machines out there running Windows on Boot Camp partitions many with Parallels software installed too.

I have a hard time understanding why the Mac users are installing a $200.00 copy of Windows 7 and a $70.00 copy of Parallels on there Mac Lion machines.

When I said that using windows requires greater computer literacy, I meant that in order to maintain Windows stability, you have to be a bit more savvy, a bit more computer literate than a Mac user because Macs are a bit more stable because they're proprietary. However, with a bit more literacy, Windows computers can be rock solid stable.

Furthermore, PC/Windows based computers allow greater flexibility and configuration to allow you to do the types of things that it wasn't quite designed to do. You have to be a computer maven to jailbreak a mac to gain the same type of flexibility.

So, for my money, with a bit of computer literacy, one can enjoy rock solid Windows PC based platform that allows the flexibility of configuration for a fraction of the price of a Mac.

Well, common sense would say about 95%. Apple had a 5.2% market share in 2011.

As PCs make up 95% of the market share, if anything less than 95% of their work was on PCs mathematically that would demonstrate that Macs are less reliable.

I'll bet, though, that more than 5% of their business was on Macs.

The very philosophy of the Mac OS I always found infuriating. If something goes wrong (and things go wrong) you can't get 'under the hood'.

For example, mine hardly ever could connect to a wireless network. On a PC, I'd go through the settings and find what was wrong and then connect.

On my Mac, you hit the 'connect' icon. When that didn't work, you check to make sure your wireless is turned on...and then you hit the 'connect' icon...and then you hit the 'connect' icon...then...well...you get the picture.

Of the dozens and dozens of computers that have passed through my home and work networks only my own personal Mac (and a friend's Mac) could not connect without a hitch. But since Apple has not seen me fit to delve into their precious settings I can't find out why.

Apple...it just works...except when it doesn't.

You do know that you have access to the exact same settings when you get to the Network pane in System Preferences, right?

Again, people are "fluent" in one or the other, not often in both .... If you're a PC guy (or gal) and it makes you feel comfortable, then it's all fine. But, as a Mac user, I can play with the same settings that you seem uncomfortable to find in a Mac environment.

I just had a brush with W7 today and I couldn't locate anything I wanted to setup (like Network preferences)... it was driving me nuts.... and gave up on setting up my internet connection via a W7 laptop.

As you can see, I'm uncomfortable in a PC environment, but give me 1 1/2 minutes and I'll setup your Mac to connect to your wireless!

I had an "Apple genius" come out to the office for a service call, as it was under warranty (I had to pay for him to come out, though, as you are required to bring in your equipment). After being unable to resolve the problem he dumped it all and blamed it on the router, which he wouldn't touch, though this was the only computer that would not work.

I didn't even bother to repeat the procedure on my home network as it was the same laptop and I'm sure he would have determined the router was at fault there as well.

I wholeheartedly agree with your premise, though.

I'm with you on that one, Smokey. I hate the interface. I didn't even discuss it because it's subjective and I find it counter intuitive, but that's me.

I do agree though that advanced functions are much more difficult with the Mac. Most of the advanced functions in Windows can be brought up with a right mouse click. For some reason, Apple decided that even their own damn mouse had to be proprietary.

Did I read the whole thread? Nope.

the Apple pads / tablets - a miracle of technology to be sure, but.... and it's a mighty big ugly but(t):

They have no USB and no memory card ports. Not even their own brew Firewire port.

Wanna load those digital camera photos on via cable or memory card? Can't.

Apple will however, sell you cloud space. Wanna send your photos up to the i cloud direct from your camera?
Um, how does one do that with a iPad? Hmmm....

A fairly glaring omission, in my limited opinion. Perhaps the latest greatest iPad now has ports. Last year's didn't.
