I haven't had a computer crash this millennium and I've got 7 of them of every shape and size. Haven't seen a virus in a decade and they are all network and on the net full time. Malware has never made it to any of my Win 7 machines and really hasn't been a problem since XP rolled out.

I know you want to justify paying too much for your computer but the things you suggest just don't happen.

This has been my experience too, as I said before I liked the Mac I had but for the money and ease of programs that run on my machine I'll go PC. (haven't had a Mac in a long time so this may have changed) Last time I shopped for a Mac I bought a PC for $1800 because a lesser Mac was $3,000.I say choose the one that works best for you, that is what matters. I like my PC but I liked my Mac too, better in fact, since it was more user friendly. I have gotten to know PCs in and out and am currently learning my new Windows 7 machine. I don't like the interface of 7 so far and find much of it hard to read, it was made for someone with good eyesight, it seems all the print is much smaller than XP was.I have to hold ctrl and use my scroll wheel to make stuff bigger. getting old sucks.

EDIT: When I said lesser Mac above I wasn't speaking of quality I was speaking in terms of what it would do and what I would get for the given money. $3,000 for the Mac at the time and it wouldn't do everything I wanted $1,800 for the PC and it did everything I wanted plus more. That was the machine I just replaced and this new one doesn't really seem much better about the same with more storage.
