The bikes will run with the TPS disconnected, just not have the spark advance capabilities. When I had the mikunis there was no TPS connected. I just taped the plug up.
On Matt's bike with the Amals, they came with a little plug we inserted into the TPS with some resistors or such inside to give the advance needed.

A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice. Pat
