Just curious about extra holes in the dash

Anyone know the purpose of the two extra holes in the America dash that have rubber plugs in them? There also are fillers in the grip switch housings that look like they might be places for extra switches; any idea if these are used for switches on some other models?

And I see in the link to the EFI America/Speedy owners manual that their speedometers had a low fuel warning light and a malfunction light. Is this specific to the later shape fuel tank or could a fuel warning be added to my 04 with a light in one of the extra dash holes?

I'm not sure about your fuel warning light, but I used the dash holes to mount the two rheostats for the remote control of my Gerbings heated jacket liner, pant liners and gloves. I drilled two small holes beside each control knob and glued the LEDs (that flash to represent the current flow to the two circuits) in from the bottom. Looks like OEM. Some folks use them for driving light switches.

i happen to be something of an expert in this field. the CEL and fuel lights you speak of are actually on the face of the speedo, as seen in
this thread.

iirc, the plugs you're talking about are for a led indicator for the alarm, i believe. on the grip control housings it's generally believed that the first incarnations of our bikes didn't have constant headlighting, and this was where you turned the lights on/off.

on my roght hand controls, i'd LOVE to turn the triumph stickey-outey thing into a garage door opener.

The other little dash hole is for setting the optional clock. I usually have a micro-toggle switch in the left hole for driving lights.

That's a good idea, John. My 04 has driving lights on a light bar, but they have a toggle switch on the headlight shell; too bad the PO didn't think about putting the switch on the dash.

I think I'll use the left hole to mount the sensor for the headlight modulator when I take it off to mount the tach I bought on flea-bay. (sure hope the 04 has the right connectors to plug and play the tach.)

I originally had the factory lightbar setup with that switch. I relocated it to the dash (and changed the switch).

I used the left hole for the switch for my driving lights. Had to ream it out a bit, but it works. I always figured the right one was intended as some kind of plug in for an accessory.

The hole on the left was originally intended for the led if you had the alarm installed.

OK, thanks guys. One hole for an optional alarm and one for setting an optional clock. And I saw in the EFI owners manual here that Triumph added a low fuel warning and a MIL to the speedo on those models. Funny, I looked at a 2009 before I bought my 2004 and didn't notice them; guess I was distracted by that extra wide gas tank between my legs. I assume the new tank had a sensor for the fuel light that is not adaptable to the older tanks? Seems like a good thing to have instead of having the engine die and searching for the reserve position with semis whizzing by.

There is no reserve on the EFI models - hence the warning light. I don't rely on the light though - it can be easily overlooked in bright sunlight. I prefer to keep track of my fuel with my tripometer.

Cheers, Richard
