i happen to be something of an expert in this field. the CEL and fuel lights you speak of are actually on the face of the speedo, as seen in
this thread. iirc, the plugs you're talking about are for a led indicator for the alarm, i believe. on the grip control housings it's generally believed that the first incarnations of our bikes didn't have constant headlighting, and this was where you turned the lights on/off.
on my roght hand controls, i'd LOVE to turn the triumph stickey-outey thing into a garage door opener.
