I looked it up and I misspoke the statistic. It's from the New England Journal of Medicine. The statistic is, a gun in a home is 43 times more likely to be used on a family member than on an intruder. The author is Arthur Kellerman. Should be easy to find.
Just for fun look up John Lott's book "More guns, less crime."
Many of those countries where the citizens have been disarmed have seen significant increases in crime as the criminals know that their victims are almost certainly disarmed. Certainly wouldn't want them to face mortal danger as they prey upon the law abiding.
Recent events in the UK provide an example. Riotous looters are left to run amok while the authorities fail to protect the populace out of concern for the thugs. I'm pretty sure that won't happen in most US cities.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
