Man is stuff really that bad in the states that a person has to carry a conceiled weapon? I mean i own weapons for hunting and the like but i just would not feel comfortable walking around with one in me shorts...besides i allready carry a pretty large weapon in there!

Not that it's really all that bad generally speaking, incidents happen on a daily basis (I too have seen my fair share of EMS/Fire incidents over the past 20 years)...so for peace of mind, our 2nd Amendment right is nice to practice if chosen to. I find i'm much nicer of a person when armed...due to the awareness of the severity of having to draw. I carry a Kahr CM9 for CCW. Under $400...9mm...and proven far more reliable than Taurus. Oh, and USA made. Food for thought.

I'n not sure that weapon would be effective against a couple of thugs armed with knives, a baseball bat or even a gun. Since so many jurisdictions have adopted a catch and release program for violent thugs, it's nice to have them wondering "Does he or doesn't he?" The ironic thing is that even those who would ban firearms benefit from that uncertainty.

After running over 5000 EMS calls, including quite a few gunshot wounds, I never encountered nor heard of anyone else encountering, a victim who was shot by a homeowner defending themselves.
I'm not sure I know what that implies. Do burglars know better then to mess with homeowners in Western SC because they they are armed?

I'm a huge SIG fan - prefer the medium frame (P239), chambered in S&W .40 - nice in-between round. But I don't carry an auto (especially on the road). I also love SIG's trigger. But they are finicky if you don't keep them clean.
Even though I like the idea of the added capacity of the sig, the reality is that if I need more than 5 rounds before a reload, I've got much bigger problems.
So, if I carry for personal protection, it's the Ruger SP-101 .357 revolver. It's rock-solid reliable. It has plenty of stopping power. It's very accurate. And it's comfortable for concealed carry. Cost me about 400.00
...you're gonna feel a little pressure....

Or even "does SHE or doesn't SHE." My supervisor is a female and she has a CCW licnese and carries a 9mm acp with laser sights under the seat in her car. We work for the OK Department of Human Services and weapons are not allowed in state buildings, so she can't carry it in to the office with her. More and more women are carrying.

My wife and I both have concealed handgun licenses and own the following handguns:
Springfield XDm9 Ruger SR9 Taurus 24/7 9mm Taurus AirLite .38 Ruger Challenger .22 Browning Camper .22
Several CO2 powered pellet pistols and pellet rifles.
Most Taurus handguns are very good quality, have a great price point, and the 24/7 my wife owns hasn't had a misfire or failure to feed in the over 1200 rounds she's sent down the tube on the range.
We own the handguns as casual hobby, sport, and for personal protection when I'm out of town on business and/or we feel it would be prudent to carry. We "carry" a handgun about maybe 5% of the time when away from home and always have one with us when we travel. When we do carry, it's usually the .38 because of size and weight.
It is currently unlawful in Arkansas to openly carry a handgun in a public place or off of one's personal property, and a person must obtain a CHL if they wish to carry a concealed weapon.
When I walk my dogs, I usually have a CO2 powered airsoft pistol on my side. My dogs have been jumped a couple times by strays, and the airsoft would provide a non-lethal sting if and when it happens again.
One of the nice things about a CHL is that in order to get one, you have to go through a one day safety and familiarization course and send in your fingerprints for a background check prior to receiving your license. The few times I've been pulled over, I've always presented my CHL along with my DL and other docs, and the cop then knows I've had a background check in order to have it. I've been told they feel a lot more at ease knowing the person they are dealing with has no felonies in their background.
I LOVE putting holes in targets!!!! And I LOVE that I don't have to belong to a "gun club" in order to own a handgun or keep it on me or in my house. I also LOVE that I don't have to "register" my weapons with the local authorities like some other countries.
"An armed society is a polite society" may not be true in ALL cases, but it does the trick here in Arkansas...

I dont think thats true at all. I interact with the police on a daily basis and I had one of them run my info on his cruiser computer and show me what pops up. Sure enough when you punch in my info all my drivers info, address etc comes up along with my CCW info. I asked if that makes him nervous when that comes up on his screen. His response was that its quite the opposite. He knows that anyone who has a CCW is not a convicted felon ,has taken the time to go to the classes, go through a federal background check and pay the fees(its not cheap). The odds are very high that that person is a law abiding citizen. As he put it "criminals dont go to all that trouble, they just buy a street gun and carry it in their pants regardless of the law"

Do lots of homework and soul searching before you buy a Taurus. You probably don't buy cheap tires, doorlocks or other important items, so don't cut any corners on a handgun. Buy one that is time proven and not prone to jam (if a semi auto). After all, if the need arises that you have to send lead downrange, you don't want malfunctions. At that point, your life and possibly your family's life depends on your firearm and your ability to use it. After you make a choice, take whatever steps necessary to obtain a concealed carry permit, practice shooting lots and carry the gun with you whenever legal/necessary. An arsenal at home won't help you when you aren't there. After all of that, my personal choice for a concealed carry weapon is the "baby" Glock model 27 .40 cal. with magazine extender (for extra grip without extra capacity...bummer). I also keep a couple of $25 pistols to give to Hillary's gun police whenever they decide to round up the guns!!

I think you're right Stephen, after the comments on here I will probably stay away from the Taurus.
A little background. One of the reasons I have not had firearms in the last 15 years or so is because up until last Friday I have had pretty big dogs in the house. In the last two weeks I put 2 dogs down because they had cancer. Sam and Annie ( Black Labs) were my early warning system.(I don't do well with alarms, I forget the codes, set them off accidently etc.) Also most burglars won't mess with a house when they hear a large dog inside. Of course if burglars ever got in, my dogs would have probably let them have the run of the house and lick them goodbye. I'm just feeling a little vulnerable right now. Home robberies are not uncommon in Tulsa. Recently, one just occured a couple miles from here where some thugs came in the back door of the house of an elderly couple and sent the husband to the hospital. I know...why not get another dog. I'm just not ready now because I'm still a little raw emotionally. Plus while in the service and after I enjoyed target practice and going in to the woods of Colorado and plinking, and I am not really a hunter. Haven't done that since HS. Like Doug and JC said, shooting can be fun like any other sport.

I've had a Taurus since right before Christmas and have had several hundred rounds thru it, 5 or 6 different brands, with no problems. I happy with it and thinking about buying 2 more.
Check out Taurusarmed.net. It's a lot like this place. Most of the guys there own multiple brands and there is a ton of info.

Well Stewart, I always thought they were alright. I've heard good things about Ruger also. It just seems some here have had a few problems but I read on their website that they are unconditionally guaranteed and you can send them back if something is not working.

Except I have seen it differently with a good friend of mine who was on his Harley, who has tattoos to his wrists, getting harassed. And he works as a VP of a bank and is head of security, that's why he has the CCW.

BTW, in case anyone gets the wrong idea from my posts, I qualified as 'expert' on every weapon I touched in the military and grew up vaporizing rats down by the river with a '98 Argentine Mauser (sporterized). I had a redneck buddy in high school that didn't feel a day was complete without gunfire.

If your gun jams during a gunfight, there is a good chance that you won't need a warranty claim. You have to expect the worst and be prepared as well as possible. One suggestion is to ask some folks who put their life on the line everyday to make a recommendation. I haven't seen any law enforcement carrying a Taurus. Plenty of Glocks, Sigs, S&Ws, Barettas, Rugers, ect. though. I saw a qoute from Henry Smith regarding concealed carry that said, "Being armed is not comfortable, but comforting."

...read the statistics. I like to shoot guns. They are fun. That being said, statistically speaking, you are 43 times more likely to be involved in gun violence if you keep a firearm in your home.

What's the survival rate? If I legally shot an intruder is that gun violence.

Sorry for your loss, Labs are great dogs and so loveable. I found it helpful to go to shelters and play with the dogs there. I ended up adopting one just a few days after I lost my last one.(I wasn't looking to adopt, just trying to comfort myself.) I hadn't even looked at her really but she broke out of her cage and then out of the room she was in and came out and sat right down next to me. How could I not take her home.

I looked it up and I misspoke the statistic. It's from the New England Journal of Medicine. The statistic is, a gun in a home is 43 times more likely to be used on a family member than on an intruder. The author is Arthur Kellerman. Should be easy to find.

Dogs are sneaky that way, I got a little terrier in a similar manner. I ran over a little black dog on an asphalt road on a moonless night while driving a pickup truck. When I jumped out and looked under the truck he jumped into my arms. We spent the next 14 years looking for his real home.

Just for fun look up John Lott's book "More guns, less crime."
Many of those countries where the citizens have been disarmed have seen significant increases in crime as the criminals know that their victims are almost certainly disarmed. Certainly wouldn't want them to face mortal danger as they prey upon the law abiding.
Recent events in the UK provide an example. Riotous looters are left to run amok while the authorities fail to protect the populace out of concern for the thugs. I'm pretty sure that won't happen in most US cities.

Cool story. And also from me, sorry about your dogs. Every time I have to put one of mine down I cry like a baby. Just saw a list that put Labs at number 1 on the popularity list. My boxers always make the top 10. Strange thread. Dogs and guns. I'll bet you'll never see a "Cats and guns" thread. At least, not in a nice way.

I lost both of my dogs exactly two months apart, just a couple months ago. They were 14 (died in her sleep) and 15 (cancer). I guess I'm feeling similar to Paul. Even now, when the train goes by (tracks are about a half mile from my house) I expect to hear them barking. Yes, I had a cat, too, but he died in '07 at 15. I'm not replacing any of them for quite some time. I have lots of friends with animals if I need a "fix."
Nothing to do with guns, but I do notice noises more, house settling, car doors closing, etc. This isn't the crime capital of the world by any means but we did have a methlab house in my neighborhood several years ago.

It's tough to know when it's time to let them go. Annie was an 85lb. lap dog who would try go get up and snuggle with you on the couch. In the last couple of years she also had Arthritis and she would look up at me through slightly cloudy eyes from cataracts as if to say "I'm doing the best I can". I had to borrow my son's mom's dog, Penny, for a few hours this past Saturday to get that "fix" you're talking about, John. There's no way I am going to an animal shelter right now, Ian. I'd come home with 5 or 6 dogs.

I personally don't choose to carry a firearm but here's a tidbit I always share. After running over 5000 EMS calls, including quite a few gunshot wounds, I never encountered nor heard of anyone else encountering, a victim who was shot by a homeowner defending themselves.
Lots of other scenarios, though.
possibly like how many responded to homeowners shot (or worse) by encountering intruders, when the homeowners were the only party not armed?
And you may see me tonight
