This is my email history with Carlos, real nice guy I talked to at TPUSA.
I need advice from the Borg Collective:
Are these mods pricey or normal?
I have a friend who is an excellent mechanic, so the labor costs for me will be minimal
My concern is Carlos says I need to do nothing to my Cylinders, (I have about 5k on the bike)
but its always been my understanding I would at least need to hone the cylinders when installing new pistons and rings.
Also since its a Nikasel lined cylinder from the factory do I need a special diamond cut honing?
Also how can Matt Capri "hand gap the rings" without the cylinders, or is the gap independent of the cylinder wall measurements?
P.S. the email history is in reverse order

Hello again;
Yes throttle bodies too... I mentioned on the mail with the price
quote.
Thanks again.

I don't know man , He IS one of the "B-alls" of Triumph performance, but NOT the ONLY one.

Sounds a little "pricey" to me.

There are two other "guru's" here in Florida, and I'd talk to BOTH of them before I dropped 2-4K!

Bill @ Bonneville Performance, (386) 322-0559
&
D & D @ (850) 456-0354.

(I will be using one of the two)

Price difference may shock you.

Good luck.

If your only concern is the instructions provided by Carlos then put yourself at ease.
I think TPUSA is the only place that offers the HP 865 kit. If you pick Carlos's brain hell tell you that kit is designed for low mileage motors. I beleive how you can get away with not honing.

Nikasyl cylinder coatings are very hard. With only 5k on the engine the most you would have to do is scrub them a little with a scotch brite pad.
Matt can "hand gap" the rings on a new cylinder at his shop, you aren't changing the bore diameter so your cylinders will be the same as any factory spec. cylinders he has at his shop.

Your statement is spot on Sir!
I do the ring hand gap for the kits ( The Old Timer only does the race engines)

What's your point Erle?
You are mixing apples with oranges.

if you're concerned about honing the cylinders, take a bore mic and see if you get ANY difference. if not..new rings on Nikasil will seat just fine on the low milage engine you have described...just like wearing in a new engine...no worries there, the only thing I can think of that may cause issues would be if you didn't run it in "right" and you began to use a bit of oil. Just trying to ease the anxiety for you. Can I get a witness?

I would not hesitate at using either of these guys for anything. Both top notch with longtime reputations in Triumph high performance mods and parts.
It is all about how much one is willing to spend I reckon.

A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice. Pat

I think Carlos is right about it being apples and oranges here, though. You can cheap out and just throw in a set of Wiseco pistons or your can really try to maximize your performance by upgrading everything else. As the saying goes, speed cost money, how fast can you afford to go?

Hey Carlos, are you still lurking, lol
With the above listed mods, what kind of rear wheel HP and torque could I expect, also should i do anything with the airbox, I believe you told me on the phone the airbox isnt all that bad.

Absolutely!

I think it's CLEAR that I consider them ALL great!

Guess it wasn't clear that I was throwin' out alternatives incase someone wants to settle for less than World Record Holder, and save some money.

More importantly, it gives three choices to consider!

No disrespect noted or implied.
