You can say what you want about her personal life, but she had a one of a kind powerful voice.

Powerful voice and reasonably good actress stilled by prescription drugs, just a sad ending. Sure made for a sombre mood last night backstage at the Grammys.

Yep Paul, the absolute most thrilling rendition of our national anthem I've ever heard.

(...it's a shame that voice is now gone for good, alright)

Yeah Dave, good point.

My wife Judie made an interesting comment this morning about this. She said because Whitney probably didn't start doing drugs until she met Bobby Brown, and because she seems to have gotten even more dragged down by them than he now appears to be, it reminded Judie of the same dynamics in the 1962 Jack Lemmon/Lee Remick movie about a married couple of alcoholics, "The Days of Wine and Roses".

Watching the news you'd think she was a great philanthropist, or statesman, etc., who was struck down by an assassin.

...and, by the way, Dolly Parton wrote "I Will Always Love You" and, IMHO, the earlier version by Linda Ronstadt was better.

...and young Linda Ronstadt was even hotter (also IMHO).

Yep , Saw something along thoes linens on face book also.

I frankly never cared for her. I would rather morn a friends fathers death and another ones impending death than wast my time with her.

I saw her when she came to the USS Saratoga at the end of Desert Storm. What a bunch of BS, all for her image. she was a joke then too.

and speaking of being struck down by an assassin, Where were the Grammys for Darrell???? Now HE was shot down! all he got was a grammy nomination for "Im Broken" and they didnt even give it to him. The band was nominated 3 different times for best metal performance. ummm Jethro Tull won,,,,WTF Even today I still wonder WTF?

You hit that one pretty darn good. 3 registers and 3 octaves for Whitney I figure. A full 4 and 4 for Ronstadt. Lauper and Freddie Mercury levels of singing.

But, there is always a but The clarity of her voice was simply amazing! After the anthem discussion I went and listened to her version. Whoah! That lady could sing and had the stamina to hang on those long notes without breaking down.

I wonder why so many gifted people are such a mess. Is it the fame or are they just not hitting on the right cylinders due to some sort of short circuit that also caused the talent?

WHICH, kinda reminds me of the late great(and EXTREMELY twisted) comic Stan Kinnison and one of his best known comedy routines about this very issue...

Well, I certainly don't wish to speak for EVERYONE with talent Ron, BUT I've always thought all MY "talent" all stems MORE from a leaky exhaust valve than it ever did from any unsorted electrical issues!!!

You had me at "Stan Kinnison"

It's sad, we've all known people who walk the razors edge with drugs or alcohol. It always ends badly.

It's also sad that some ruling classes use starvation as a weapon.

I often wonder at the self destructiveness of those who have it all. I'm sure we could all speculate on what it is they are missing in their lives that causes their self destruction but it is obvious that fame and fortune do not bring happiness.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I can see where they get to feeling all alone. Not sure if those around them like them or their fame and fortune only.

I know for me its horrible sometimes with all the young girls begging me to take them home, wanting to touch me or get a bit of my hair. It gets old. They just can't help but thrill to the sight of my rippling biceps I guess. But I try to be strong.

Almost all of them suffer from some sort of insecurity and the sycophants that surround them enable the self destructive behavior. Seen it. Been there. Not pretty.

They always push the envelope and are arrogant enough to believe they can always pull out of the dive. They will always get their sh-t together tomorrow. Then there are those who achieve success, but never believe they deserve it.
