It's been awhile since my last post, doing some routine maint. on the ol' girl, and still having a problem with the charging system. I've since removed the R/R and stator and sent them to Ricks electrics in New Hampshire, he checked both units out and said they are working within limits. I also installed a 10 gage wire with an inline 30 amp fuse from the R/R to the pos. post on the batt., and a 10 gage wire from the neg. post of the batt. to the frame. Also looked at all the connectors and fuses cleaned all connections, fuses and used dielectric grease on them.I got the R/R and stator back from Ricks electrics installed them started the engine no problem, 14.4 volts. rode to work on Monday 24 mile round trip no problems 14.4 volts. On friday went to the Triumph dealer to get some oil 12 mile round trip on the way back voltage was bouncing up and down 9-12.3 volts.got home shut the engine down tried to start it nothing just solinoid clicking. Put the Batt. Tender on over night, started the engine this A.M. let it heat up steady voltage then it started in again 9-12.3volts I disconnected the plug from the R/R to the stator to check the voltage from the stator, at idle 16v.ac at 3k rpm about 36v.ac. Pluged in the R/R volts bouncing up and down unpluged it again checked the voltage from the stator same reading as above. At this the engine quit batt. discharged I checked the ohm reading between the pins on stator plug I got .9-1.0 ohms, then I checked from the pins to grnd got infinity. I'm thinking that when the R/R or stator heat up that there is an insulation break down causing this problem? I read through the threads in the forum and nobody has had this continuing problem. Either the stator was bad or the charging wire was replaced. does anybody have any further thoughts on this problem. Getting desperate. Thanks

When you say "same reading as above", is that the good reading or the bouncing up and down one?
If it's the good one, then I'd say the stator is OK (I'm assuming stator is the alternator and the R/R is the regulator, it's a translation thing)
Have you checked the main ground from the battery?

Yes on all three questions the 1)good reading 2)stator is the alternator, R/R is the regulator3) main ground is good

He put several loads on the stator at at different rpm's and checked the voltage outputs. He also checked the output of the regulator and said it was steady between 13.4 and 14.5v

I think you have a bad battery with an intermittent internal short.

I am on my second rectifier. 1st rectifier went bad, got a new one from a company out west with a longer wire. Had to reroute it. Been 2 years.Keep burnig wire under seat. Mechanic friend came over Tested stator, Still good , Tested Rectifier. Bad. Found on conn one of the blades was not making good connection. Wasn"t pushed in all the way. Am going to relocate rectifier to front of bike, to get cool air. Getting new one from rick's in NH. Nice people on the phone. Getting wire 34 inches long to reach front. May try to rebuild bad one for a spare.

Andy how did your friend test the rectifier. I sent both the stator and rectifier to Ricks he said both are good.I'm not doubting his work but I would like to test my rectifier when it's warmed up . Thanks for the input. Chuck

He uses a multi meter on the plug endwith battery disconnected.Checked continuity from one spade to another.Found a bad diode. He went to motorcycle school and is also a serve tech manager at a car delership Also owns a few bikes and put a GS1100 motor in a road king frame. Cool Bike. No triumphs. should have rectifier monday or tuesday. Am mounting it on lower front of bike on 2 tubes that go accross. Better Cooling.

I tested my rectifier/regulator as Andy had said and found the following: When the engine was cold I checked continuity from spade to spade no problem, when the engine warmed up I got 2.2 ohms between the black & white wire and the three other wiires in the plug.I don't know where that black& white wire goes to. My Triumph maint.man. doesn't show that color wire comng out of that plug? Any suggestions as to what continuity between the blk & wht wire and the other wires may indicate?

Has any body installed the Mosfet R/R? And did you cut the plug off from the wires that come from the stator? And did you see any improvement in the voltage to the batt?

Read the threads by DEcosse, that guy covered every electrical issue that came along and he knew his stuff, at least he had me convinced.

Yes. I have detailed the conversions in this thread here. The increase charge was typically 0.7v (from 13.7 to 14.4v). +1 on Decosse's info. He was a key influence on my electrical mods.

You'll find a link to Decosse's Mosfet installation guide (on the RAT forum) in the thread link I supplied - my link to him is just under my Stage 4 heading.

Thanks guys, I read thru all the info in the threads. A lot of very good and intereting info there. I think I'll be ordering the Mosfet R/R this week. Thanks again for your help.

Yup, it sure was nice having him around for the short while he hung out here. He was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. Hopefully we'll see him back here again sometime.

Since my last post I installed the Mosfet R/R, sorry to say same problem, voltage bouncing up and down. I think I know what happened to cause this problem. The first time the batt. died on the road I got a jump from a car. Not knowing that the car ignition should be turned off,[I found this out by reading some info. on line.] I jumped the batt. and off I went.My question is since I had the stator and the OEM R/R checked out by Ricks Electrics and both checked good what else could have been damaged in the charging system? The Battery???? What else is in the charging system that I can check out?
