I have ridden from the east coast of the USA to the west coast and from north east us to the far south us. When I broke down I pushed to where I could fix it and with points and carb I was always able to get it running again. Even when I broke a ring I managed to ride it home on one jug from south NJ and lost 5th gear in my 72 bonnie I opened it up along the road and pulled the broken tooth out that was jamming the shift mechanisum and ride it home with 4 gears.

EDIT: Just remembered another time that the nut came off the main shaft opposite end of the clutch basket because a tab washer had failed allowing the shaft to slide back and forth making the clutch pushrod ineffective. Again opened the trans put the nut back on and periodically snugged it on the way home but made it there.
