I say kick start only for the R3. (that will weed out the casual riders)
I do like the factory 904 and 6 speed ideas for the smaller twins.

05 speedmaster - 1100cc, 11:1 racing pistons, Carillo rods, thunderbike cams, ported and polished head, 2mm over intake and exhaust valves, Barnett kevlar clutch, scepter pipes, oversize manifolds, 45mm HSR's, TTP stage 4 firestarter

another vote for threaded valve adjustment. that would be so awesome.

Threaded valve adjustment is so much easier boggles the mind why anyone would use any other method.

It would be interesting if there was a way to have a hydrolic valve adjustment and still keep the OHCs.
larger cc displacment the closer to 1000 the better. 6 speed definately. no more air boxes pod style air filters in perferated metal covers. Slip in adjustable baffles. some type of built in air fuel mixture adjuster that would allow you to dial up the fuel.

YES! No shims! I hate shims! Adjusting valves on aircooled VW engines was so much nicer (other than that whole crawling-under-the-car thing).

I would guess because maybe Shim (either Over or Under) Bucket is a more direct approach to opening and closing the valves and thus has less reciprocating parts than would a threaded arrangement, which would necessitate the need for an additional rocker-arm in order to hold the threaded adjusters, which in turn would make the shim-style engine capable of higher RPMs.

Plus, because of the lack of that additional rocker-arm, it would make the Shim designed engine less expensive to manufacture.

Well, I was answerin' Ian's question here, John!

Though of course, other than costs, there really is no reason why Triumph couldn't have designed a threaded arrangement for the Bonnie line, as they're certainly not all that high-revving of engines.

I see no reason why they couldn't have done it that way though since many automotive engines have over head cams with cam followers and are adjustable through a threaded part that makes contact with the top of the valve stem. The cam follower goes under the cam and sits on a pivot on the opposite side of the valve and has an adjustment over the valve. I have seen these where that pivot is hydrolic as well.

True Ian, but once again, those cam followers would be an added expense for the manufacturers, wouldn't they?

Had it been initially designed that way I don't think it would have effected the retail price much.I think time saved with adjustment during assembly would cancel out added material cost.

I'm assuming valve shims is a legacy design and their philosophy is if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Yeah, you're probably right, John.

Plus, I'll bet all the Service Managers at all the Triumph dealerships worldwide just LOVE that they're designed the way they are, TOO.

What do you mean by legacy? If you mean harkening back to the twins of old then no. The twins of old had threaded adjusters.

Could they have replaced the shim system and still retained the classic Triumph looking engine or would it look more like the T-bird?
One of the reasons I like the America/Speedy is because it looks like a Triumph engine.
Easier shim adjustment would certainly be great though

I'm assuming that most of the Bloor era bikes have shims for adjusting valves, but I don't know. That's what I mean by legacy. Dealer service departments already have all the tools and shims and such to support that technology.

I think they could have done it and retained the nostalgic look.

Ok so they could keep the tradional look.
Easier adjustment would be great.Maybe even I could do it!

Unless I read him wrong, I think John meant that after all this time of the Hinckley twins having this arrangement, they're not likely to ever change to the threaded design, Ian.

Edit: I see you've answered Ian in the meantime here, John.

I see and that is probable, too bad they couldn't use the lever system to push the valve down and pop out the shim instead of pulling the cams.

Yeah, I think so too, Ian. The only issue I can see with that might be that the valve cover might have had to be slightly higher in order to have room for any rocker or cam followers.

Well, pursuant to my brief discussion with Ryk about stainless steel exhaust systems from the factory, none of us has the perspective to know how they arrived at what they sell. There are a myriad of factors involved in created such a complex (but seemingly simple) organism.

I would love to see the motor that comes in the T-100, 360 degree crank, more power, what's not to love? Oh and by the way, I'm also in the threaded valve adjustment camp. I had an old airhead BMW it was so easy to adjust the valves , it was a one beer job!

Better suspension is my only complaint really. The rest of the stuff I've done is because its the way I wanted it, pretty much all looks. However, 904 factory would of been sweet.

Turn the head around so the carbs are in the front and the exhaust could go straight out the back. Speedo in the head light bucket no dash with dummy lights.

Haven't looked at it closely enough but you could probably turn the head around if you wanted to. Used to do it on the old twins. Cams would turn the wrong way but not sure if the way they are ground if that would be an issue. Also not sure if the chain is centered or off to one side anymore.

You would loose the "classic" Bonnie engine look with that. But I agree get rid on the harley looking center console put a tach in the speedo or a seperate unit along side of it.

+1 along with the passenger peg hangers that I have been told is Triumph trying to make them look like the old HD tool boxes. Well Triumph had those tool boxes I think in the late 30s too but could have been 40s.

From the very beginning of manufacture, Matt...1902, because almost all early 20th Century motorcycles had a belt which ran directly from the crankshaft to the rear wheel with no transmission, and a ratcheted tightening pulley which would engage the power to the rear wheel.

You mean to tell me that Harley didn't invent that with the evo engine???
