I see no reason why they couldn't have done it that way though since many automotive engines have over head cams with cam followers and are adjustable through a threaded part that makes contact with the top of the valve stem. The cam follower goes under the cam and sits on a pivot on the opposite side of the valve and has an adjustment over the valve. I have seen these where that pivot is hydrolic as well.
