If you could induce triumph to change one (or I guess more) major mechanical aspect of the TBA from the factory what would it be? (for example, vtwin - god forbid, 6th gear, hard tail, kick-start, shaft drive, etc)
Mine would be 6th gear. (I'd like a kick-start too....)

R3 needs a bigger engine. Maybe add nitrous as factory fit option too.

Threaded valve adjusters instead of the shim-over-bucket arrangement they currently have. (...you're welcome, Ian!...but no, I couldn't care less if they ever put a kickstarter OR a breaker-point ignition on these babies, ol' buddy!)

Yep, that would be a nice option to have again, Jim.
And Ryk, I agree too. But, this brings up something I've said for years and every time this sort of thread is started, and that is that they should've made a "Bonneville "R" model years ago. And by "R"(or whatever code-designation ya want) I'm talking about a factory-built and readily available at the dealership Bonneville model with a larger displacement, like say pushing the 1000cc mark, and with much better suspension units front and rear to handle the increased power on the road.
(...in other words, once again, there was NO reason why Triumph's overall thinking in regard to their twin-cylinder air-cooled line should have been that these machines be solely "built to a lower cost" and not have a model along of them on the showroom which would've shown that these babies can perform somewhat equally with some of the slightly more expensive motorcycles out there on the market)

Gotta agree with Keith here, Matt. And while I understand your concerns about engine cooling(in places other than CA, where they've been enlightened to the positive aspects of lane-splitting for YEARS now, but please don't get me started on all THAT here again ), there is just NO way to make a liquid-cooled motorcycle engine look as good as an air-cooled one, period!
(...at least I'VE never seen one...have YOU???)

So, Dwight and Keith, I guess you're not fans of the R3 or T-bird? Both liquid cooled, and look good to me.

Overall, I like those bikes Matt, but no, their engines aren't the most "classically beautiful" engines you'll ever see sittin' in a motorcycle's frame. The R3 looks like a tractor/car motor to me, and as I've said many a time around here over the years since the T-Bird's debuted(and thus has become somewhat of a running joke around here about "Dwight and his fins"), I think the boy's in Hinckley slightly missed the boat with the T-Bird's engine aesthetics.
In my opinion they should have given the T-Bird more pronounced faux cooling fins down near the cylinder barrel area in order to not only give the appearance of what many tend to view as a more traditionally styled "Cruiser" engine(they were attempting to sway some Harley owners over to the T-Birds, ya know, and who is more "traditional" in their way of thinking about these things than Harley owners, right?!), but also because basically fins are more interesting to look at than is a slab-sided structure.

Sorry, that would have been a deal-breaker for me.
I too, would like a 300-400cc displacement bump along with a 6th gear.

so, googling around for 6th gear on triumph america, I came across this from british customs:
Triumph Motorcycle Countershaft Sprocket Do you find yourself looking for another gear when riding the freeway? British Customs has engineered a lightweight countershaft sprocket that allows riders to adjust their gearing ratio easily. Each sprocket is manufactured from 8620 case hardened steel and CAT plated, with lightening holes providing reduced weight compared to the stock sprocket.
(of course, as they imply later in the write-up, you'd be sacrificing low-end acceleration in favor of top end).
But I'm curious if anyone here has tried this.

I'm running a 19T, but not one of the BC "lightened" ones.
I like it for the highway riding I do, but I actually lose a little top end.

Yep, I went one tooth up on the countershaft sprocket on my BA years ago now. It is great for lowing the revs about 500-700RPMs out on a flat level open stretch of highway, but yeah, you'll find once ya hit a grade, you'll be downshifting to 4th in order to keep the revs up to where our bikes like to be to start hitting the plateau of their torque curve, at about 4000-4500RPMs.

I want os many things changed. I think the threaded valve adjustment is a great idea, cam bearings would be another. I would love kick start and points, no expensive CDI to fail. Love to see about 1200cc air cooled engine with carbs too but still a vertical twin.

A Shaft drive- have gone to the 19t primary sprocket so do not feel the need for a 6th gear.A fair bit of flat riding over our way so to change down now and again is no big deal!

A 6th gear would really be the only thing on my list. I don't need a kick start, I don't like how a shaft drive looks.... Maybe I am biased since I already have knee indents and spoke wheels How many of you can HONESTLY say you would have bought this same bike with a 904 and belt drive and a couple other things for $2500 or more than the base price? If I know one thing about Triumph owners, it's that the majority are tight assed when it comes to spending, and a bike like that would not have sold very well. Say I'm wrong if you truly disagree.

You're absolutely right . This a great bike for the money. The only thing I really wish it had is self canceling blinkers.

Belt drive would have chased me away.
Another mechanical improvement would be better placement of the oil filter.

A factory 904 would be sweet, as would a 6th gear. I could go with/without self canceling signals. (a kickstart???? Naaa.... I remember when the kicker on my 73 - 750 Bonnie would bash ya in the shin if you didn't throw it from that TDC sweetspot to start her up...OUCH!

Well Dave, I can at least say I would have DEFINITELY spent that addition $2500 for a near 1000cc engined(putting out around 70 to 75 ponies), and upgraded suspension(with maybe fully adjustable for both pre-load and rebound)units, for a bike that looks like the one I have now, which at a grand total of just over $10K would STILL comparable in price to a H-D 1200cc Sportster or a Ducati retro-styled GT1000.
(...yep, I would have alright!)

I doubt belt drive would up the price too much. As for 6 gear and a bigger bore ,if they'd done them when they intoduced the bike instead of 790cc and 5 speed it wouldn't have cost much. Same with the double skin header pipes they've now apparently introduced[add those to my list] Hindsight is a great thing though. All vehicles change and evolve over time I just glad they brought Triumph back at all. I had thought it was gone for good. But this is a wish list, nothing's perfect. For example, I have the knee indents. The look is great and was what I wanted, but the extra fuel on the non-indent tank would be handy at times. Over all I'm more than happy with the bike as is.I love it! It always puts a smile on my face.

It is a wish list but I have to say I am very happy with my bike just the way it is. If those old twins were timed right the kickstart won't snap back and smack you. Mine never did and I used to run 10.5:1 pistons in them.
