I quit in 1978 cold turkey from a two pack a day habit. My first wife had a gangleon cyst on the upper lobe of her right lung and they had to remove the lobe. I saw what it was like for her to rehabilitate from lung surgery and it "sort" of influenced me. Then, one day I came home and saw a cigarette that had been half burned down in an ashtray. It was our brand, and she had been sneaking back into the habit. After freaking LUNG surgery!

I decided the only way for her to quit was if I did too, so I quit right then and there. She later graduated as an RN, ran off with a doctor, and started smoking again. What a moron!

A couple times, I've tried to add up all the money I've saved by not smoking since I quit. BIG bucks over time. Now I have more for my heroin habit.
