'05 Speedmaster with 31,000+ miles and all stock clutch parts: For a while now, I've gotten a screeching sound when I let out the clutch in first gear from a stop. It usually only happens one time early in a ride, and then I don't hear it again for the rest of the ride. It always does it on cool days, but only sometimes when it's warmer. I've always just thought of it as part of the warm-up process for this bike.

Yesterday, the bike did it several times on the way home from work (nice day w/ temp's in the 50's). It even made the noise once when I let out the clutch in 2nd gear after a downshift to make a turn. This was at the end of my 20 mile commute home, so the bike was fully warmed up. The free play in the lever is adusted; oil level's fine; I haven't felt any clutch slipping.

Is this noise a symptom of something? Is there anything I need to look at further with this?

Thanks,

Will

I have no experience with this but sounds like one of two things...
1) something is in there and getting caught between plates when letting out the clutch.
2) based on what you wrote its getting worse with leads me to think worn out clutch. Odd at such a low mileage but it is what it sounds like to me.

Either way I think your going to be pulling that clutch cover to inspect.

I would be concerned. You might want to pull the clutch side cover off and look at the clutch release mechanism for any problems. Release bearing starting to fail???? In the automotive industry, a failing release bearing will often screech but usually all the time the pedal is depressed.

It could be a bit of clutch noise from the plates initially slipping but I'm guessing. What type of oil do you use? Did the noise start after the last oil change?

Thanks for responses so far. I've used Mobil 1 4T 10w-40 in the bike since new. Honestly, it's made this noise on chilly mornings for a couple of years, and that's been across several oil changes. Yesterday's ride home was the first time it's made the noise several times during a ride. Even then, it didn't even make the noise on every take-off.

Will, did you ever find out what this was? i have a similar issue. i had the big bore kit put in, and the HD racing clutch, ever since i get an occasional squawk, squeak, screech when down shifting from 2 to 1 and also pulling out riding two up. of course it is a dog at the vet (never does it when you have someone knowledgeable looking into it.) anyone?

Hmm, I never figured out exactly what it was. But the bike hasn't made the noise in such a long time that I actually forgot that I had posted this question about it. Sorry I can't help, but I didn't do much digging after the noise went away on its own. If it comes back this fall/winter then I'll look into it.
