Hey guys, went out to the bike this morning to ride to work. Turned key on got lights, hit the starter, lights go out and I got nothing,no click, no lights ,no horn ,nothing completely dead.I put the multimeter on the battery,12.7 v with the key off, turn the key on and I got .03v....WTF!!! Tried it on the battery tender, goes strait to a green light,no red at all. Checked the fuses and I had a burned small fuse, changed it,nothing. What do you think? Battery shot? Headlight relay? Bad ground? Thanks.
Bill.

Was the fuse melted? Maybe whatever made it blow caused a short that drained your battery enough before the fuse blew.

Fuse was a 15a, just looked burned not melted.I was testing the voltage of the battery from the battery tender pigtails the other day and managed to pop the inline fuse with my multimeter...related to that maybe? I really am leaning towards a bad battery. When I put it on the battery tender I always get red light for a minute before it goes green, even on a fully charged battery, today it went strait to green.

Short prob wasn't that short you spoke of. Could very well be the batt like you just said.

Bill, If you put the voltmeter across the actual battery terminals (not some extra alternate power source leads but the + & - terminals themselves) and get 12.7 volts (key off) then .03 volts (key on), I would say the battery has failed. It probably has an intermittant internal contact. It appears that the battery is fully charged as indicated by the charger and the 12.7 volts but when you draw any kind of amperage, the internal circuit opens probably due to heat/arcing.
If this is indeed happening, make sure the battery doesn't pop in your face and douse you with acid. Internal arcing inside a battery could ignite the hydrogen gas inherent in them.

That's how I took the reading(at the battery). Its my feeling that its the battery too. I am going to go get a new one before I get into any more in depth diagnostics. I have a headlight relay in my toolbox and may go ahead and change that too after I figure out if its the battery. Relays are either good or bad right, there is no grey area?

If you have access to a battery load tester that should tell the story. Even an el-cheapo HF load tester.

To repeat what others have said; your battery is toast, time for a new one. I don't know if it's our climate or what but I'm on my forth battery, every two years like it's set on the calendar.
Got an AGM this time. I'll see if it does any better.
Relays? Yep. Go or no. I don't recall ever having an intermittent relay problem on anything that wasn't a bad connection.

Ok,took the battery to Cycle gear. They tested it and yup...its shot. Fitted the new battery and its Alive Got a new battery free because its a Megaboost battery with a lifetime warranty. The battery lasted about 18 months. Now taking into consideration the fact that I ride year round 3 to 4 times a week commuting to work in the Vegas heat and winter cold,I don't think that's too bad. Free Lifetime replacement, you got to love that. Cycle Gear were (as always) great to deal with,no hassle. In and out with the new one in 10 mins.

What the hell, free lifetime replacement means it lasts forever. If this one craps out I'll get the next one from Cycle Gear.
