Mozart called the pipe organ: ”the king of all instruments.”

Gilles Parenteau is a performing musician and instructor at the Selkirk College of Music in Nelson, BC. His love for pipe organ combined with serious innovation makes him a leader in what he does. Here, I've provided his website with an extraordinary video on the home page. Enjoy!

I worked on the roof of a very old church years ago and to get on the roof I had to go through the pipe organ. It was cool to go on all the catwalks through all the pipes to get up to the roof. I had no idea how huge they were, I am still awe struck from it.

I'm what you could call a pipe organ ******. I love them. I am classically trained and have done a couple of world-wide recognition performances with the National Theater Organ Society. I've played some pretty sweet organs in this country. One of the biggest I've played was an organ with 98 ranks of pipes...and there's a lot of pipes to a rank.

I can tell you it absolutely amazed me at the size of what you don't see! The pipes took up almost as much space as the chapel.

I get goosebumps every time I hear Toccata and Fugue in D Minor on a real pipe organ.

My dads biggest accomplisment as a assistant rector at Trinity Episcopal Church in Huntington WV was being able to raise the money to replace the old pipe organ with a very nice one. Cant remember the name of the company that did it. but it was great! Hearing the song "LIFT HIGH THE CROSS" at max vol was amazing! (problem was finding a organist w/ enough balls to open it up!LOLOLOL)

The top link is only the left hand side. It is not HUGE to look at, but there are lots of pipes you dont see.

This is the National Cathedral in DC.

He must have been a fan of Tony Banks from Genesis! He even looks like him a bit!

Same kind of setup, except the foot pedals.... We often talk about drummers need to have 4 independent limbs, he has too!

Thanks Keith.

Only way to hear a real pipe organ is in person, I doubt the true sound could be captured in a recording.

Holy cow....Vincent Price in the Phantom of the Opera Batman!

My Grandad (God rest his soul) loved to play that particular piece on his Hammond electric on Halloween for us kids growing up. I still remember him playing it on the pipe organ in the (formerly RLDS) Church of Christ World Headquarters & Auditorium once by invitiation as a kid. It is by and far much better on a real pipe organ.

And every drummer tried to emulate Bushy's performance in In a gadda da vida (yours truly included)
