Hey all, so after my two big treks over the last few year I have 22 states marked down for having visited them while on my bike

So, this year (May 26th) I will be knocking out a huge chunk of them by going from Baltimore, Birmingham, Dallas, Aztec, round the four corners, clip the bottom of Nevada, California is a bit grey, going to be led up the coast by a triumph (t100) buddy, Portland, Bozeman, Fargo, Saginaw, and back to bmore....this should let me color in the bottom of the map pretty well (I will be taking detours into TN, MS, AK, OK, etc)

So if you are along my route and want to tag in for a bit, have some "ya gotta stop at" advice, or any other input, let's have it.

Your drop from Spokane to Portland is going to make you miss some amazing roads. If you have time, think about taking SR2 from Spokane to Seattle then follow 101 down to 30 then over to Portland.

Heck, I'd even say once in Montana, head 'er up and over the 49th then over to Vancouver, BC, (to see some of the best of God's green earth) then drop down to Seattle and onward as Z suggested. See ya in June(ish) Bill!

Live to love, love to live.

Chateau Friar has a spare bed and a garage if you need it. It's 60 miles or less off the beaten path.

EDIT: Actually I probably won't be back yet from Arizona and California if you hit here the first couple weeks of June. But if not and you need help while passing through I can hook you up.

Same offer here on your last leg (between I and A). I might even be tempted to join you a good portion of the way home as I have a daughter in Martinsburg and I don't get there near enough.

Ya know Bill, if I'm readin' your projected itinerary and dates correctly here, you're going to pass very closely by Prescott AZ just a few days before the Southwest Triumph Fest begins on June 1st. And so, I don't know how "carved in stone" your dates are at this point, but if you could move your ride back just a couple of days, you'll be able to attend this shindig for at least a day or so and meet some terrific people here...including the good Friar.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

On your way through Fresno stop by for a rest or crash on the couch. You may be ready because 99 from Stockton to Bakersfield is not a pretty picture.

Fresno to Bakersfield sure wasn't pretty. But traffic was pushing along so fast I didn't have a lot of opportunity to 'look out the window.'

Wow guys, thanks so much for the offers on places to stay. I am afraid I would keep your households up however, I am an Olympic snorer LOL. However, It would be great, to have some ride alongs! Obviously there is plenty of time to coordinate. As for the dates ...dang, i may have to rework my dates. Is there a website for the triumph event? What are the dates of it?

So should I stick to all back roads for this area?

sadly i have tried all morning to rework my days off and the best i could do was get an extra day which does squat such is the life of a network engineer in television; but i am truely bummed to be so close, yet so far...HOWEVER...i am keeping the extra day (and i WILL make it to that event sometime in the near future)

so with that extra day (and the input of you guys) i have reworked my map(s) to encompass the 101 on the west coast, a little bit of Vancouver, and some of Ontario. i have also modified my route through Montana and North Dakota to keep me out in the sticks (@FJ and anyone else who would know, is that a good move? from what i can see from arial photos it looks like pretty country.)

http://g.co/maps/tzcx6 (june 5th without highways)

http://g.co/maps/whcak (june 4th with highways)

http://g.co/maps/m87eg (june 4th without highways)

@pipedr, would you still be up for that tail end tag along if i pull us down through ON, and NY?

Sorry to hear ya can't finagle the dates to coincide with the rally here Bill, however I did notice you'll be travelin' through Prescott at one time on this ride. And so, let me know what day that's gonna be and I'll buy ya a beer at one of the saloons along Whiskey Row when you're passin' through.

(...oh, and I'll ride along with on White Spar Pass, part of AZ-89 that runs from Prescott over the Bradshaw Mtns to, say, the little burg of Congress)

Since you will be so close you should plan a stop at Yellowstone Park, I have always wanted to go back again and I was there for a couple weeks last time. The hot springs, mud pots ,geysers ,and sulfer springs are something to see. All boiling right out of the ground and the wildlife is amazing.

I'm still up but it looked like you were cutting through PA on the western side. I'm near Pittsburgh and will travel to hook up but ON is a bit out of my intended scope.

11 days? You'll be in the saddle sunup to sundown! One of your routes is 7600 miles. That 690 miles/day. You can do it, but your mind will be a week behind.

NOTE: If you don't have a gps device that shows you gas stations along the way, fill up at the 60 miles mark when out West. Unlike the Eastern Seaboard, gas stations are like hen's teeth. (or so it seems).

And you'd be best advised to keep at least one day in your hip pocket.

Exactly what I was thinkin' here too, Tom.

Bill, while I understand your trip is presently geared to doin' a whole lot o' travelin' per day, I REALLY think you're gonna kick yourself later on if you make that right turn at Bakersfield and ride up the CA's pretty much boring Central Valley, instead of continuin' over to San Luis Obispo and at least ride up Pacific Coast Highway from there and through Big Sur and then to Monterey, before then heading back inland towards Sacramento.

While this route will probably add an addition 5 or 6 hours hours to that portion of your trip, I think it would be well worth it.

(...the central CA coast along there is breathtakingly beautiful!)

What they said. If there's no difference to you in the tradeoff of extra time vs scenery, besides boring slab, let me throw this in; the central valley is littered with livestock yards along the highway. You better have quite the tolerance for the fragrance of nature...and not the type of ocean-breeze- against-a-pinewood-forest-type of nature breeze you would likely encounter on the other road. Just a thought from someone who took that road once.

And let me know when you're coming around Vegas if you're looking for a little rest or need anything.

Yeah the wife and I took that route from San Diego to Eureka in a ford focus and I loved every second of it. Wished my brains out that I was on a bike.

I'll say that it could get a bit tiring North of San Francisco though..haha. Curves were bothering me in the focus after a while.

Gotta keep up or it's through the oleander you go! Though, depending on the time of year, that can make for a colorful departure.

Bill,
Hows your route looking? My schedule is pretty tight but maybe you'd like to get your hands on the Journal when you go through Portland and get it to the midwest or back east somewhere.
Lemme know. If I can't meet up with you then Ill get it to Soren or Brent and maybe they can do a handoff in Portland.
