Just so you know here is WI County Highways all have letters and State highways all have numbers. I can check on the construction closer to that day but staying on 33 and skipping II would be a good thing if they are working on that road. II is a pretty good hill with very sharp curves that would suck when covered with gravel.

Cool, we'll have to keep an eye on it. Thanks for the heads up!

there are a couple of good alternatives to CR II off of SR 162. I am expecting to be in that area in the next 2 weeks and will check it out.
CR II is a wicked road with a disturbingly steep down hill hair pin turn at the end of a switch back.

Rocton Tavern (Hiway 131 in Rockton) is one of the better local establishments, and it just happens to be on the route laid out by Scott. Great food and beverages to suit everybody.

What types of roads is everyone looking at riding??? Easy stuff? Twisties?? A bit of a mix?? I spend 84.3% of my free time in that area and do most of my traveling (bike and cage) on the lettered county roads. I think a lot of the off the beaten path roads have the best views of the area. There is a lot of terrain in the region and the state/us highways always take the easiest route which, to me, can be a little...... less fun. Of course, this is subjective.

With a little "tweeking" I could change the routes that Scott came up with and even do a route or 2 of my own if you would like. I'll be loading all the routes into my Garmin for the rally.

One thing to note about area roads. This is farm country and Amish country. Prepare yourself for horse drawn carts and a few road apples in places. Also, some curves may have a light scattering of gravel. Nothing serious, but there none the less. As always, use caution and everything will be just fine. IMHO this area has the best riding in the state!!

I don't know how the flatlanders feel, but I like roads with a high amount of technical difficulty. The ones that can hurt you if you don't pay attention at all times make me

I am kind of a safety buff myself and feel that larger groups should ride the safer routes and too many curves and twists can lead to unsafe conditions. Save the white knuckle rides for smaller groups or solo rides and lets just cruise.

Agree, safer routes for larger groups as there are always riders in big group rides who may not be comfortable in highly skilled areas .
You guys familiar with the area could draw up some more difficult routes as as options for smaller groups looking to do additional exploring.

+1 on safety for sure....although I enjoy a good challenging ride with lots of twisties, I think routes that offer mix of intermedite to challenging would fit best. Ya know any road can be "unsafe" if ya don't pay attention!

I don't think there are any roads in the area that are outside the envelope of rider safety or experience. I just wanted to get a feel for what people are looking for before I start planning a few rides.

Barry - Just remember we will be rolling DEEP, big group, 20+ bikes, some 2 up. A spirited yet leisurely pace is probably best. Challenging roads at times, and the ability to relax and enjoy the scenery as well.
The routes Micah and I came up with kind of had this in mind. For friday we have a ride that's a little shorter, but has plenty of twists, and saturday it's a longer ride, but more sweepers and scenic drives along the river, with the Mindoro Cut thrown in for good measure.
That's not to say they can't be tweaked - of course they can. Feel free to tweak away, just keep this stuff in mind. Also, try to keep it around 200 miles, a big group is going to move slower, and stops have to be figured in too. Usually after 200 or so miles, everyone is ready to call it a day, head back and start throwing a few back.
Something else that might be a good idea is what was mentioned before, maybe design a couple of really challenging routes and go with a smaller group, maybe have it so we meet up for some of the stops, that way people can choose which route they want to go. Nothing says we all have to go the same way. In fact we've done this in the past.

Well here's what we have so far for the saturday ride.

Easy ride, longer,(256 miles) but not as technical, lots of sweepers and great river road scenery, with some twisty stuff thrown in here and there. I figure we can leave again after breakfast, head towards La Crosse, stopping by the world's largest six pack before heading across into MN. Heading north up hwy 61 stopping in Wabasha at Slippery's tavern (of "Grumpy Old Men" fame). We then head further north towards Red Wing, and across the river into WI, and back south down the River Road. The Great River Road diverts east towards Galesville, this is where we pick up Hwy 54 over to Co Hwy T, and south on hwy 108 through the Mindoro Cut. At West Salem we go east until we pick up 162, and head south towards Westby.

I haven't planned out the stops on this ride, mostly because I don't know of any. There are a few state parks along the route, some of which may be cool to stop at. Also any good places in Red Wing, along the WI side of the river, or in Galesville, West Salem, etc. Hoping for some help from the locals with this, otherwise we'll just play it by ear, stop wherever looks cool.

Here's the google map, again hoping for someone (Barry?) to get this stuff on a gps.

In remembrance of Friar John, I suggest we wear a piece of black cloth on our bikes, maybe tied to the bars or mirror or something. What do ya think? (And hopefully, I'll have a memorial sticker by then.)

I was told by the guy who was going to run my store while I was at the rally that he just took another job starting on the 18th. Unfortunately, my other guys are not up to running the store. Unless something happens it looks like I will be stuck at work.

Yep, wearing a memorial flag (of sorts) for Friar on the road to & during the rally seems like the right thing to do if ya ask me.

That sucks dude! I was looking forward to meeting you and sharing the road to rally central with you. I'll PM Justin & arrange logistics to convoy up to the rally. Still hope things work out and that you will be able to go.

Total bummer Larry. But as usual, I have an idea to fix your problem. Burn down the store and use the money to wine and dine us at the rally? See, it's a win, win! (No need to thank me. I help people all the time with my idea's )

Cool. Dave, where were you and Chris gonna meet up with Rich in IA? I'm working on the route logistics to meet with Calkins & looks like the best place for Justin & I to meet is gonna be at Parkersburg. From there we could roll into Evansdale pretty easy & meet you dudes at the truckstop @ US20 exit 68.

Some recent work up in the twin cities allowed me the oppurtunity to 'scout' a fair portion of the proposed ride routes. I was looking for detours and road destruction and so on. I am happy to report that wild cat mountain has fairly new back top, only one rough bit on a 20mph S turn but otherwise all good. The state highways (61 ands 35) on both sides of the river are clear and in great shape, waysides and viewing areas all open. County road T to Mindoro has new black top. Going south from Mindoro the road is rough but once you start climbing you are not going to be going too fast anyhow. The top of the hill (where the actual 'cut' is) would be a good place for a photo, as there is a turn out there. The road condition is better coming down the grade, which is good because it is a much more technical ride. SR 162 is having the shoulders scraped but it should be done before the rally and CR II is open at this time.
We should have some great rides and awesome scenery.

I'm getting anxious too. Thanks Micah for scouting out some of the route, it must've been miserable having to take all those back roads on the way up to MN. Way to take one for the team!

Congrats man! That is so much more important!!

So, there is a slim chance that I will be in Moline, IL July 3-5. Is anyone traveling to the rally near there?

Okay, seems there's a slim chance I'll be riding solo from Des Moines into Waterloo/Evansdale on the 5th. Anyone in that neck of the woods heading to rally central is welcome to convoy. PM me for route details.

Did you not get the pm from me the other day with route details and a meeting point?
