The New Grand still has hostel rooms on the second floor at around $45. I just booked one for myself 'cause this year I plan on having a drinkie-poo or two.

Mountain Hound rules. Been staying there for years. Never bothered to try and book at the New Grand. The Best Western is very nice but a little far away for walking (for out of shape bums like me).

Years ago the Mountain Hound was called "The Queens" and was a stripper bar and a place to score (this, that and everything). I'm sure the vibes from yesteryear still permeate the walls and contribute to many a vivid dream.

Oh yeah, for sure Mike. I was not implying The Hound is anything like its former self. Believe me... if it was still The Queens you'd be in and out in less than an hour! Heck, I remember when the New Grand was called the Lord Nelson and it too has an somewhat less-than-illustrious past. The pub had a giant mural of bulldogs playing billiards. I wish they'd kept that painting... it was amazing! Nelson has a pretty rough and tumble past full of miners, loggers, prospectors and later on, hippies... not the artsy fartsy Bohemian capital of the world (as freedom loves to call it) that it is now.

Keith, was that the first floor (where the furniture store is now) or upstairs (or both)?

If it's the Hound you're asking about, all the action was on the first floor.

They said at one point (and this was probably when we started staying there in 06 or 07 that it was a dance club downstairs. It was vacant and they let me stash a bunch of my gear in there so I didn't have to hike it upstairs.

The dance club was AFTER my time. I frequented the place back in the early 70s when just about anything and everything happened there. It was a rough place... strippers, drugs, fights. Parked outside on the street would be hippies, dogs, packsacks, buskers, dealers and panhandlers while what went on inside, went on inside. Baker Street back in those days was a kind of Haight-Ashbury of the North.

Remember 2 Live Crew? The one year Freedom and I stayed at the Hume-idor they were playing there in the basement the night of the banquet. Yeah, they're still relevant. NOT.

No, we didn't go. But I swear you could just about hear them in our stiflingly hot 4th floor room.

It's probably a uniquely Canadian word like "tuque," or "toonie."

2 Live Crew in Nelson... I wonder what they were thinking when they got to Nelson and saw the place. Not the typical 2 Live Crew venue.

Not for the 90s it's not, but today? It's about like the time I saw Vince Neil playing solo in West Yellowstone (wasn't my idea).

Really nice to hear both you and John will be coming, Brent. It was nip and tuck for me there for a while with plans to travel across the country conflicted with the Raid. All sorted out now though and I get to do both!

John and I got a room at the Hume. The Mt. Hound only had single bed rooms, and well, I like John, but not that much.

Gordie, I stayed next door to there at the Dancing Bear Hostel a couple years ago. It's about 5 or 6 blocks. No big deal unless you forget something in your room.

It's the far or reverse or opposite end of Baker Street from da' Hound Gordie. I know you know how to find Nelson, because I remember seeing you there.
