Good points Chad. I'll add one more to that... the military which is the biggest consumer of carbon based fuels. I can't see running the military on batteries.

Au Contraire, mon frere! Most of our work is prototype work, and some of our big products have been the electrification of military vehicles similar to Hummvees. One of the biggest problems with military operations is logistics, and one of the biggest volume of materials needed is fuel. Building a hybrid electric or fully electric vehicle that can improve fuel ecomomy light vehicles by 20-30% would be a HUGE logistical and cost benefit to the military. A side benefit to that is the silence that a vehicle has when running at low speed and fully electric, that would be a big advantage when trying to move equipment without attracting unwanted attention. Again, everything hinges on the power supply and range, but 50 years ago, if you would have told me that we could have a video conference, send instant mail, listen to the radio from Berlin, and get directions from a satellite all on a phone the size of a half pack of playing cards, you'd have been called crazy. If we as a country can pull ourselves away from the Kardashians and get focused again on technology instead of waiting for China, I have plenty of faith in our ingenuity.
