I spent my first 18 years in the midwest. The countryside and roadways were generally clean and litter free. Most of the past 4 decades I've lived in the south. People don't show the same concern about containing their trash down here. South Carolina is the most litter covered place I've ever seen. When I worked down there my co-workers (medical professionals) thought nothing of throwing their trash out their car windows in their own neighborhoods.
