I cant answer that one. My wife bought me one with my first bike, and I bought one myself for the second. If you buy your own it will work but its more powerfull if its given to you, hence no bell on the America.

Yeah, apparently a bell given to you is the way they work. After that if it falls off or something it's okay to buy your own replacement.

I heard they got started way back when a cart pusher (and just to clarify, that would be somebody pushing a cart) might have a bell on there somewhere. Then, while attending a pub for a wee nip, or sleeping off a few wee nips, the bell wound alert the owner that someone was messing with his cart.

Thanks for the info guys. Being the inquisitive creature I am, I thought about trying to find out a little more about the origins of these bells and came across the following theory. Seems plausible to me:

WWII pilots started to carry there own bell and hung it in the cockpit to ward off the gremlins.
As these pilots came home from WWII many rode early Harleys and became Hells Angels and other groups they brought the bell tradition with them.
True???

Sounds plausible to me, as inexplicable problems with an aircraft back then were referred to as Gremlims.

I have one. It were given to me. My 6 year old boy tied it on for me ...... he wanted to.

They are scientifically proven to work. There is a scientist someplace that will verify that. I have one on every bike given to me.

Everybody I know that gets a new bike I give them one.

My father-in-law gave me one when I bought my America. I'm giving my buddy who just started riding one for x-mas. Giving my father-in-law a new one as well. He had an accident in Sept and I figure his old one is out of magic.

Nothing on "Woody" yet. I guess I don't hang with that many "Harley Riders".

I'm speeding because I have to get there before I forget where I was going.

It's also scientifically proven that the lower on the bike you mount them, the better they work.

Yep, I kinda think that's closer to the intended origin of the fabled magic behind the Grelim bell for sure. The guy I bought my 07BA from took his off when I signed the title...really kinda sppooked me a bit ...ya know the bad karma thing (His wife had given it too him so it was a sentimental dodad I guess....it's on his Harley now)

Anyhoo, I figured I needed to replace it & bought one for myself, and one for my best riding bud's scoot too. So far so good , & no bad karma to mess up the magic. I hope the Gremlin magic keeps working for both of us for a long time!
