Yah your hunch's right... you align the mercury switch across the frame (perpendicular to the axis of the bike) with the end with the wires on the right, so that the mercury doesn't contact the terminals till the bike's stood up. Depending where exactly you put it on the frame you might have to fiddle with it's orientation slightly... I had to turn mine a few degrees clockwise or it wouldn't fire till the bike was past upright. Just use bluetac or something to stick it there while you play with it, then something more permanant when you've got it right.
