Two years ago, I decided to go back to school. At age 47. After 29 years. Needless to say, it was scary, rewarding... And Successful! As of 12/1/11, I have an Associates of Science in Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology. I was funded by the VA, so I'm the only student in my class w/o student loans to repay. Now the Great Job Search begins. VA Hospital Miami has an opening in Vascular Ultrasound, so that's my first stop. HERE WE GO!

Congrats! Plenty of work in that field.
As a side note; years ago my wife took some classes in ultrasound diagnostics. At the time, I was having stomach problems and had undergone 2 ultrasounds at two local hospitals and they found nothing wrong. Still having problems, I went in one morning as a school project and the entire class performed ultrasounds on me. The instructor found the problem in short order. Kind of embarassing to my doctor that 2 hospital specialists couldn't locate my gallstones, but a roomfull of students could. A quick surgery and the problem was gone.

Thanks Guys. Hermit, these things happen even to U/S techs. One of my trainers was 6 months pregnant and HER Dr's U/S tech scanned her and said the baby had developmental problems. She was an emotional wreck that day. I sent her down to see my OB/GYN instructor, who had 25yrs experience scanning. Turned out there were no problems that could not be solved by the expectant Mommie drinking 1gallon of water per day. If you go to a school to be scanned, the instructor will be not one who got an "A" in the course, like me, but one who WROTE the course and knows ALL the tricks. Also, scanning at a school is FREE!!! If there is a school near you, it's worth your while to have a scan: heart, major blood vessels, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, can ALL be done in less than an hour.

Congrats Brian...I got my bachelors at 40 and working on my masters right now so I know exactly how you feel!! I used Uncle Sam's dime to get my sheep skins as well as they still have the 100% tuition assistance program for active duty. It's funny how holding two baby boys in your arms can put the fire under your a$$ to get back to school and take care of business. Congrats again man...you deserve!

Well then, I guess there goes the second half of the ol' adage, "...and those who can't, teach", right out the ol' window, eh Brian?!! Congrats, well done, and here's to a successful job search! (...btw, the following is in reply to "Mister Freedom" up there: GRRRRRR...BARK BARK...GRRRRRR!!!)

From one Tech to another! RIGHT ON ! Only I shoot though non-living things, (presently helicopter blades). I had wanted to go into that field when I retired from the navy,, but Industry was paying more. If you could, please PM me and let me know what is being offered in the $$ dept. I may go back myself and let GI Bill pay for it.

It's never to late to reinvent yourself, in this economy you did the right thing. I have a buddy that is a young 40 yrs old and has just 7 months left on an accelerated nursing degree...he switched from owning a mortgage company.
Ride like you mean it.
