The KS Wildlife & Parks report on the Spring season reports over 32K taken by hunters in the spring season, in Kansas, in 2011, alone - without check-in the numbers are done by survey but unless their methodology is faulty to the point of being corrupt the numbers can be considered to be in the ballpark.
This site put the estimate in 1999 at 5.46 million, the Wikipedia entry gives an estimate of 7 million, with a low in the 30Ks in the early 1900s.
