I wonder if the apparent variations in fuel consumption between the octanes could actually be explained by other factors altogether ... one of the fuels was carrying a higher percentage of water or contaminants? After all - these were not lab tests and we've all picked up a load of dirty fuel at one time or another - especially just after the service station's holding tanks have just been filled.
