Found a problem with audacity. It will playback a track while you record another one but seems to shift the second track a bit so when I playback both tracks they are out of sync. I think thats whats got me singing the blues over my failures with Keith's tune.

I'm starting to wonder if Keith's tune sucks for the sake of this exercise. It lacks structural intrigue, is of a non-universal nature and holds no interest beyond the first 60 seconds. When I uploaded it to dropbox, I imagined input as to how it could be shaped, morphed, reinvented or developed as a unified expression of ourselves. Kinda like sitting around a living room where each player just sort of feeds off the other, adding licks and lyrics as they go. Like jamming! And we have that already... Tom added a GREAT bass track to what was already there. Superb, actually (nice going)! But the initial structure sucks, imho. It lacks dynamics mostly, as well as spontaneity. I'm ready (as the author of 'Keith's track') to scrap it and head in a new direction.
Let's throw a bunch of stuff out there... let's JAM!!

Preacher if youre not already, try hitting record from 0 and letting it roll till the music starts. I'm thinking theres a delay in engaging the recording if youre trying to "punch in" at a specific spot. To keep it simple, you wanna keep your tracks the same length from the same start point so theres no problems with sync later. PM me if you have any questions.
KEITH This is sorta the reason why I uploaded 2 quick tracks of my own. I like your track but I knew it'd divide. If you dont mind I'm gonna continue to build on the Latin jam cause Ive learned a bit from it and dont like to quit stuff Ive started. I was actually jamming with my buddy to this track. We played it on the PA with the bass mixed in, then my buddy played drums and I jammed a guitar track for it...haha Nothing solid yet but I'll upload something for you when its done.
I got a couple more riffs I'll upload today to get some more bites. Keith, WHAT ELSE YA GOT?...haha

UPLOAD ALERT!....WOO WOO WOO!
I stuck another track up in my brokenfixed file. Just a bare bones rhythm guitar riff to peak interest. Its got a rock n roll beat to it 160 BPM. Figured I'd upload some distortion and go simple.

I was working on a drum track... Got some things I liked, some I didn't... a work in progress.
I'll have to take a listen to Tom's new track.
Keith, don't worry, music is always a work in progress.... just like architecture, it's never finished until it's time to go.
1st draft doesn't mean it's a final draft. You got us started on something, then we add our own, and we evolve the whole thing, one track at a time.. that's how things work when doing an online project, 'cos we can't be in the same room at the same time.
So don't worry, it will take more time, but we will get there.

I like Keith's tune. Its simple and challenges me to play something beyond my usual 3 chord blues or country progressions.
As far as audacity is concerned, I loaded both of Keith's tracks into a proJect file. When I click record it starts the playback of existing tracks and the new track simultaneously.
On Keith's project the problem is not with audacity but rather my crappy playing.
On a basic blues project I started separately was when it wasnt in sync. And yes, with most computer failures the most likely origin of fault lies more with the operater than with the eqipment.
I will continue with the line I'm on till I can truly express myself musically in compliment to Keith's tune as it is. It's a learning experience through which I'll become a better performer and writer. Thanks Keith!

Hey guys... I'm just downloading your latest stuff and as I wait, I figured I'd comment a bit more about my track. Hey, it's a great progression... I like it. I've slowed it down and turned it into a kind of blues number and rather like that. When I play it 'live' and give it dynamics and vocals it works quite well, but we just can't stuck to the "4 loop same as the one before" way it's set up right now. And I don't like the bridges (or lack thereof). After the fist 'loop' I, as a listener lose interest. So... structural changes needed, which is a way to say don't get too carried away laying down polished tracks 'cause changes are likely to happen if we continue on my track collectively.
I really appreciate your comments here guys. I'm glad I was able to put something out there that inspired some of you. Meanwhile I'm thinking 'bout writing some lyrics for it and re-introducing it as an actual song with an open structure, and added (and needed) dynamics. Something less mechanical.
Still downloading to my computer. Looks like I'm in for some listening... this is fun!

Hey Tom, that Bobber riff is a hootenanny! Mike, have you met Keith? he lives over in BC you guys should hook up and put something together. I mean it don't seem that far on the map. Anyway, nice tunes Just further reinforces how outclassed I am as a musician amonst this group! Yet I persevere

I got Mike's files downloading now, cant wait to hear something from someone new..haha
Keith everything youre typing about that song is exactly what I felt while playing to it. It just wasnt my place to say it, I guess. SO if youre looking to do some revisions I'd be happy to record a new bass line to it. We're definately on the same page I think.
I gotta admit that hearing Preachers acoustic song made me want to "just play bass" on Keith's track..haha.
Seriously Preacher, dont be so hard on yourself. I've felt "outclassed" and insecure about my playing too. I heard both tracks from you and Keith and thought..."I just play punk rock, these guys are gonna hate anything I do"
I just got over it and told myself "Youre not trying out for a band, youre just creating music that they dont have to like". As long as youre improving thats all that matters.

I am still working on trying real hard to do justice to Keith's riff, its defiantly Santana-ish. I have a favor to ask, I'm hearing you guys and I'm pretty sure I'm on the struggling side to keep up. So being that I have no natural ear for figuring out what chords your playing, Maybe when posting the rhythm riffs to drop box (DB)ya might could add a short word or note pad of the chords, like Keith did here for his progression, to DB? TOM - really dig the bobber! (yea im a punk and rocker also) ALL- trying to find time between my crappy work sked and family duties on the weekends. (how many of ya still have young kids that require your attention all the time? oh yea and a list of honey do's??? - sorry had to vent for a sec. being as I do not play lead, I may post a rhythm riff or two of my own. It will prob be a verse and a chorus, bridges are welcome to be added. I came up with a AC/DC inspired riff. I think Ill put down. It might happen tonight if I feel good when I get home at 130AM, Well My 10 yr old liked it enough he asked me to teach him how to play it! Thats gotta count right

Yeah Scott Ive been waiting for those files of yours for a week. Where are your priorities?..haha
Yeah I'm 29, have no kids, and a basement full of instruments and free time. In fact the only other priorities I have right now is finding a bassist for my SECOND band.
I'll try to figure those notes out for ya. I gotta admit I just jam and dont know the notes myself. Keiths track got me looking at charts and chords and whatnot..haha
Feel free to write something else to that bobber riff. I wanted to just offer up a quick riff to keep it simple.

Sounds like a rough existence! LOLOLOLOL
I wish that was my only worry! Do you have a sound bite of your current band? is it punk? If so Ill put a file in my DB and invite you to it.

this was my old band Dead Pegasus that I played drums/lead vocals for. I also wrote all the music and recorded/mixed an 11 song album for. This was our 1st show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm8K7SkXGkMhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQiV5LRFiU0&feature=relatedmy 2 current bands are works in progress at the moment. I wouldnt say "punk" exactly, I like to blend genres really. Lets say (in old man terms) Sabbath meets Motorhead with odd time signatures.

I'm afraid I'm a child of the 60s rock-n-metal speaking. Through the 70s my favorite bands were any acid-rock groups from the 60s and 70s. Throughout the 80s 90% of the time I was out partying in my car I had Jimi Hendrix blasting on my (get this) 8-track so a lot of my blues/rock stuff is inspired by Hendrix. I never had any favorite punk groups but generally liked the music due to the totally free expression. Throughout the 90s my priorities and attitudes changed. I actually like some classic country, love bluegrass because it appeals to my Irish roots, really dig on some cool jazz vibes, and still like my Hendrix plus your other classic 60s/70s groups. I've heard some really cool rock-n-blues-punk stuff in the contemporary Christian genre. Oh yeah, back in junior college, 1975-77, I played in the college band. Sousaphone/Tuba. It was during that period that I began to have a greater appreciation for different music styles and began to listen to jazz differently but I guess that was when I really opened up to classical music. Those guys like Beethoven, Bach, Shubert, Chopin, and Wagner really blow my mind with some of their creations. I can't tell you which selections particularly but in that music I hear the origins and more of just about every music genre that I totally dig from the modern era. I never could personally get into hip-hop, but I've got a nephew who does and I know a lot of people do.
I don't think that we are up against a time table here so let's just have fun makin' music. I get uptight with myself because that's how I motivate and push myself to improve. So, I'm gonna loosen up, relax and just have fun with it.

Tom, I definatly hear some hard core punk! Misfits/ circle jerks! wish the sound in the vid was better but I would have been hanging by the PA feeling the mosh! zand buying us beers! I liked the short clip of what looked like either a very cool big garage or an elks club!

Still on music, but a tech question. Ok I read this http://www.harmonycentral.com/docs/DOC-1351and this http://www.harmonycentral.com/docs/DOC-1871but neither of them cover having a multi effects processer in the chain. I have been running mine at the end of the chain. I will usually set the RP to a clean settting with the chorus and use the amps reverb setting so I can control it on the fly. Same with the stomps. I'll leave the RP clean and hit either my delay or dist or whatever im looking for. Or I run a custom sound from the RP and stomp on stuff as I feel like it. But the main question is,,, Does It really matter? Thanks.

Preacher I didnt get any PM?
Scott, I think it matters with reverb/delay and distortion. You want the distortion to echo, you dont want the echo distort. The distortion needs a clean uninterupted signal in order to sound "full" I guess. and you echo/delay that.
I have my wah setup backwards (before the multi-effects.)
My multi is at the end of the chain just because I have stereo outputs that go to their own fender twins for right and left. Now I'm getting a loop station and have some fiddling to do. Ive been told theres a difference in the chain I guess you can switch it up to find whats best.
I would think if your multi has amp modeling or compression you'd want it at the end of the chain to enhance the various pedals youre sending through. I guess theres nothing wrong with having an extra distortion after the multi.

tried to lay a drum track down yesterday... it didn't go well.
I think it was the fact that I was rushed all day, and in the end, I setup the kit and tried to do it too quickly, for the little spare time I had then.
I couldn't .... one of those days when nothing feels right.
Also waiting on my mic that isn't showing up.... and no news about when I will get it.
Will try again later.

Thanks for trying, Jeff. I'm afraid I haven't been working on the project lately... spending time taking care of life. But we're in no hurry, as Preacher implied. It's just fun to know a bunch of us are into doing this and I know something will come out of it. And I mean... it's just so cool to think this is even possible! People from all over coming together to do something together. It's a bloomin' technological miracle it is! AND it's indicative of true human nature which is to work together for the greater cause. This is enjoyable in so many ways!

Hey this whole endeavor has really been a blessing for me because I had gotten so out of sorts with my music. Most of my time with regards to this project has been trying to just catch up and get back into the groove. Also, getting all the tech stuff lined and sorted out to produce something viable. It's great! I'm still so jazzed about this whole process. I even ran across a deal on a nice inexpensive bass guitar last night. I brought it home and spent more than a hour just going at it on the bass. Thats the first time I've been able to do that in over 20 years. Now I want to find a descent mic to use when recording my acoustic stuff and maybe another one for vocals. This whole process has me doing something I've had in the back of my mind to do for years but haven't and thats to put together a nice digital studio setup for my PC and really develop some of the musical ideas I've had over the past few years. You know we've got guys who've signed into this project who represent probably the last 4 or 5 decades of music. I wonder what the ages or our musician are? I'm 54 and learned my first chords on the guitar at 10 maybe but didn't start to really try and learn till I was 15. At 17 my band director put his Fender Precision bass in my hands and got me started playing bass. Since then its been a journey. And here I am now with you guys from all over the world practically. Totally diggin' it! Not only that but I've been connecting with music people all around me in my area. All this is taking place at about the same time but not connected yet it is somehow...

Ditto Preacher, life has just gotten in the way for me and aside from strumin the accoustic while watching the tube etc i have really not seeked out any kind of projects, i am 46 started playing when i was about 12 (can you say "house of the rising sun"! and "smoke on the water"!) LOL spent about 14 years with one group of guys, all originals never covers. I must have 300 or more completed sets of lyrics laying around some good some drank to much bad! :-)
As for mics i am a big fan of the Shure SM57 for instruments, amps and the like, although its good for vocals as well just a bit directional, i have always used the standard Shure SM58 for vocals, you can buy them new for 100.00 buckes and they will stand the test of time.

Same here, Always had a beat in me, but I never could let it out.... too loud or too much... Now I found that edrums can be very close to acoustic drums, so I started a new journey. I am waiting for one of those Blue Mic Yeti ... looks fun and interesting to play with. Seen a lot of reviews and I can't wait to give it a shot. It small and convenient enough. This is the review that sold me to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMeJUlKm8Os&feature=youtu.be

Yeah I'm a fan of SM57's and SM58's for playing live. For recording vocals and acoustic guitars I'd recommend a $100-$200 condenser mic of any brand really. The thing is, you need a phantom power XLR connection. Dont know if your audio interface is equipped but its definately possible. Condenser mics for vocals are just so crystal clear and warm. Same with picking up acoustic guitars as well. Definately what youre looking for when recording "delicate" types of clean, undistorted instruments. This is the one I use for vocals. It actually comes with a free cheap little pencil condenser mic so you can mic the bridge of the guitar and use the big boy for vocals at the same time. Havent tried it, but the pencil mic works good for snare drums. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/mxl-4000-multi-pattern-fet-studio-condenser-microphone

most of the small digital recording systems offered up now have phantom on or off at least on one channel. The problem with the condensor mics is their cost for a decent one, a good large diaphram one will run a person at least 350.00 bucks like the sm7 or something like that, but if you are looking for a mic that will not require phantom, has decent vocals both recording and live the the sm 58 should be the mic of choice, i have seen some of those suckers that look like trucks rolled over them time and time again and they still work as good as the day you took them out of the box.

Great feedback! I know a little about the types of mics but haven't been around the current technology to learn very much about whats good and whats trash. The last garage band I played with was back around 87 and our sound gear was old then but worked well enough. I'd never heard of phantom power till last year but I know what it is now. What I'm doing is patching directly into my PC's line in for amplified devices and the mic in for mics. I do have a small mixer board that I may setup and use, but I'm thinkin I should research sound cards/systems to use with the PC. You guys talking about your multichannel mixers and I'm just barely above a portable cassette recorder! But I'm having fun. I've practically stopped watchin TV. I'm mostly doin my music. Hope to write some more. I'll probly do some maint. to my bike this weekend and take a ride. Temps in the 60s and clear. I didn't get to over the holiday, but definetly this weekend! I got a cheap Palmer bass. It plays great. Ya'll know anything about Palmer?

There's nothing wrong with Behringer equipment. It's cheap, yet decent quality and get's the job done. It is however, pretty much disposable because no one really fixes the stuff, and spares are hard to find. But for the price you can't go wrong. Scott, I have one of those mixers you're looking at and it is a great little item. Even has phantom power!!

Keith, I have been using behinger since 2007. My 60W 1X12 2 channel modling amp is a Behinger along with my BugeraV5 (behingers butique amps) As long as you treat them with respect, they perform great. Yep though, I agree they are disposable at this price. kinda like Dano FAB stomp boxes Whic my kid has and its great. Preacher -- Behinger is basically a knock off company. Tey take other stuff and make it using cheaper parts and honestly, the stuff is really good. just watch out for the power suplies and input jacks, the jacks are plastic and put right on the circut board. I was able to salvage my imput on the 60W. Nw I just keep a short cable pluged into it and you connect through a stomp. kees the imput from getting any extra ware and tear.

most of the small digital recording systems offered up now have phantom on or off at least on one channel.
The definition of decent tends to differ I guess. A $100 condenser mic is all a hobbyiest needs in my opinion for recording vocals. I've used the SM57 on recording vocals and it tends to give a thicker/bassier sound the farther you get away from it. It forces you to be right in there on the mic to keep it crisp and consistent and still needs a bit of eq afterwards.
I use my SM57 for guitars and snare drums, but they do sound good live through a PA as well. My SM58 is my main vocal mic at practice. Yeah theyre built like tanks, but we're talking about recording a couple tracks in the living room. So what if a cheaper condenser mic cant be run over with a truck?
Hell, I just bought a $100 tascam field recorder with 2 small condenser mics built in and the thing is amazingly responsive for something so cheap. I had it outside during the summer recording guitar in a small headphone amp outloud with crickets singing in the background and jets flying over head...it sounded amazing for something so small and inexpensive.

And the best thing is that it keeps you from thinking about lights during the winter months!

I understand, i guess all i am saying is that if you buy something like the 58 its the last time you will have to buy one, i guess thats my point, i have tried many many cheaper boards and mics and stuff but at the end of the day you end up replacing them, so like everything else i buy something a little bit better, keep it for as long as i like and when i don't i can still sell it to someone becasue it will still be worth a little something, thats all, to each their own , i get it,
