Okay, I'm set up with dropbox. My username/id is the same as the email in my profile here.

That's great, but I'm not clear on how this might work. Wouldn't we ALL need access to your account, and use that exclusively as a place to upload our .wav files? So in other words, that account would be the project's account and not a private account for you. Am I on the right track here?

The concept is that there be a common storage area that all members of the group can access. They will all need to be members of dropbox and have dropbox software on their computers. One member will create a share folder for the project and invite all the other members to access the share. They would only have access to that shared folder.

I'm assuming this part but upon acceptance of the invitation the dropbox shared folder will appear in that members dropbox folder on his computer. The dropbox folders can then be automatically or manually syncronized depending on how a user configures the dropbox settings on his machine.

There is a public folder in each user's dropbox and instructions on the dropbox website on how to use it.

I've invited you to my share to see how all this works. Didn't you say you joined with one of your computers?

Yep,

Hubert, you will need to invite all who want to join in this project. That's the only glitch. You will have to personally invite each member participating in this so each can have access to the shared folder.

GrandMaster Keith, I can contribute some different things here (most are talking about guitars!). I have a djembe, a doumbek, a saxophone (starting to learn a little there) and a drum kit.

each person has to load software? Seems a little over complicated.

What was wrong with just sharing login info for wikiupload?

Sorry, didn't see the post about wikiupload...

I guess the fact that DropBox is free is an incentive.

And the install is minimum, takes about 10 seconds.

But I think we should let Keith decide. This is his baby. Whatever is best for him will surely work for us too.

Hi guys... sorry 'bout falling behind a bit here... it's been a busy day. Okay... Hubert, I got your invite email to dropbox. I now have an account and am part of the "BA RAT Commission" folder you set up. I'm starting to get the hang of dropbox.

Dropbox doesn't seem complicated at this point, Tom. The software is just a small chunk of code running in the background which keeps files synchronized between your computer and dropbox. I don't think it's even necessary to have it running in the background at all times, only when you need an update from dropbox. Meanwhile I'll checkout wikiupload to see what that's all about.

Jeff, I do appreciate your vote of confidence, but I'm kinda turning to you guys for some guidance here. As said above I'm in dropbox now along with Hubert, will check out the wiki thing and am open to suggestions.

I'm still working on coming up with a bare bones song we can start working on. Shouldn't be too much longer.

Tom, you are gonna like that pedal. I've had no lag problems with my RC-30. Oh, and I asked John to lock the other thread simply so there would be only one thread going for this project. I guess the timing was a bit off, eh Tom (sorry 'bout that)!

Keith,

What chord progressiopn are you playing with?

The other night I was messing around with A, C, D, and E (in that order). Just doing Rythm stuff, had a cool sorta country vibe going on semi-clean. Dont know for sure if I was in time with the drums, but it was a stock country beat off my Digi-Tech at 90Bpm. (OK Ill Admit I was going for a sorta Zepp version of Gallows Pole meets Ramble on) I might add that I dont know how to play either of the songs, just messing about. then it morphed into a jangly country type groove adn on the open V was doing pull offs with my 2nd and 3rd fingers.

ok well now I have to double check my e-mail on here so I can get invitations

Hey guys, I set up dropbox to see how it works and if it would be usable for our project. I dont want anyone to be left out so if there is something better suited then I'm all for it. Keith is the lead man on this project. If he wants to set up a share on his account or use mine, makes no difference to me. But with dropbox, the more peopple you invite the more space you get. I'll need a list of all who I need to invite to use my share. Or just send me an email or PM if you want to join my share on dropbox.

Right now, Scott I've got a pretty cool groove going that I'm trying out in different keys. I'm probably about 24 hours away from uploading the first .wav file for all to hear, and when I do, I'll post the chords.

Once again guys, I appreciate the vote of confidence here but like you, I've never done this before so any and ALL ideas are constructive at this point. I intend to try dropbox under Hubert's account tomorrow. If it turns out that I can figure it out, then trust me, ANYONE can figure it out, lol!

Btw... I'm getting excited about this and I sense a lot of enthusiasm from everyone else. This is a real cool thing we're doing here folks and I'm grateful so many of you want to be a part. Thanks guys!!

I did some stuff on audacity last night. A very flexible app. You can gen a click track then press record and it plays the click while you record that track then you click record again and it plays the click plus the track you just layed down while recording the new track. Thats as far as I got last night but next time I'll shift and combine tracks into a mix. Its a lot simpler to meet up and jam. So what if I've got to get a pssport and drive 1200 miles! Hey Keith! Whats for dinner?

Okay everybody, I just accessed dropbox on one of my computers that doesn't have the software installed and am able to upload files. I should be able to download them too. It may be because I'm the owner of the account but more likely thats not the case and I'm curious to see if any of you can download/upload files to my shared folder without the dropbox software yet with a dropbox account through the dropbox web interface. If it works, that means that Keith should be able to get to the files in the shared folder from his studio computer provided he is able to access the internet and log onto his dropbox account and access the shared folder through his dropbox web interface. That would totally be cool if it works that way and would mean thet all the software does is keep the dropbox user's files in sync when its running.

I just went to my chordie forum to look at the recording section for tips. Keith or any one with mixing powers what do you know about this unit. it looks like it could be way cool, but not sure how it works into the puter. Would it go to audio galaxy once plugged in,,,,boy I see a better puter desk on the Santa list

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MultiMix4USB/

maybe I had better learn my cakewalk program after all, actually use the tutorial disk

Scott, I don't know anything about that product but, at a glance it looks like it'll do the job! The fact that you can monitor via the headphone jack is trés cool! If you can get Audacity or some other software to work with it, you've got a winner! Instrument/mic interface with the computer is really what it's all about.

Hey if dropbox works for everyone I'll join the club. At first glance I was thinking "upload file, download file" but if it keeps us all in sync without over complications, It'll work out good for us then. I'll make it work somehow.

Keith: the Rc-30 is supposed to have a slight lag when switching between different phrases or something. I read it on the reviews section in musiciansfriend. I dont know if youve gotten that far in using it. But let me know because I like the stereo outputs. the RC-20 doesnt have that and I'm pissed.

I think when Keith gets his file up on drop box and posts the link to get the file, we'll be taking the next step and feeling out whats next.

It'd be awesome to just have like 5 people come back with different guitar, bass, etc. riffs all based on the Keith's original. Thats what I'm into this for. I wanna hear "scott's take"...or "billys mix" and so on...haha

not to get to far ahead or anything. Just give me the riff and I'll upload today.

oh yeah Keith, its important to have a bit of space in the begining ya know?...run the metro for a measure and give a "1,2,3,4" with the guitar or something.

Gives the drummers a little time to hit record and swing around to the get the sticks ready.

So far, Tom I've had no problems with the RC-30 other than not quite knowing now to use it properly. The stereo in and outputs is a GREAT feature. For example, I have my guitar coming in on one side, and the keyboard on the other and I can output them separately to the mixer. Nice. As for the tracks lagging... well I haven't played around much with two tracks at a time so maybe there's something there I haven't noticed yet.

For sure, Tom. I have a track with percussions that I let run for a few bars before the music starts. I'm trying to keep the music basic and simple to allow room for everyone else to add their stuff. I might throw in a lead track on a separate file just so you get the feel for what's going through my head. What I'm working on could be described as techo-latino if that makes any sense.

Btw... it's a busy weekend for me and I'm late getting this together. Hang in there guys, I'm working on it.

So, how about a head count on this guys. Who's in and what will your contribution be? Remember, this will be a totally original piece and as such required full instrumentation, lyrics and vocals. Your contributions are VERY IMPORTANT in the success of this project. And I'm wondering who's ready to go on Hubert's dropbox account? I had a busy weekend but will have something uploaded within 48 hours.

I'm in for any instrument, joined dropbox, and I'm waiting for the invite from Hubert.

I also made 2 different ghost/metronome tracks of my own yesterday which I hope to upload tomorrow and gather collaborators.

1 track is a twangy guitar "outlaw, take the money and run" type of song

1 track is a simple surf rock type bass line with a couple of changes

Anyone interested let me know.

You know Im in,
guitars.

I know I saw the electronic set in Keiths man cave, who else is a drummer? If needs be I have a buddy wo plays and can probably get some stuff for us.

Oh, He is not a BA member BUT he is responsible for getting me on the best dirt/ trail ride I have ever been on when I was 13. I have not been on a dirt mountain trail since But I will always remember that cold , rainy day in WV where I got a nail in the back tire and we were 10 miles (??? I think maybe more)away from the farm!

If no one minds I am starting a second shared folder with some of my originals in it and I would like to invite you guys to dip into that also. Our BA project takes precidance of course

I'm a drummer...more importantly I have a drum mic kit and a way to mic each drum separately to its own track.

Awesome Scott, I'll check out that file and see what you got.

No, I don't think you're missing anything. But check back soon, I'm sure something will turn up. Like I told Tom earlier in a PM that I've just been practicing so I can produce something upload worthy and learning how to use audacity. But, hopefully in the next couple days I'll have an original piece in there and some R&B guitar tracks. But I've mostly been practicing and waiting on you.

Plus, its Thanksgiving here and I've been trying to get geared up for family from out of town.

So, how's yours coming oh fearless leader?

My "starter" file is almost ready for upload. It will contain percussion as a glorified metronome and I will probably include a separate .wav file with a suggested melody, just so ya'll can get the drift of my drift! I believe tomorrow is 'launch' day!

I have something uploaded now, guys. I've included two .wav files... one you can add to, and the other just to demonstrate a melody that might fit with the chord structure.

The groove is at 164 (or 82) bpm and consists of the following chords...

Dm Gm A7 Dm (x2)
D Gm C F A# Gm A7
Repeat four times.

Alternately (for guitar) capo up to the 5th fret. Here, I'm giving you the chord pattern for simplicity sake... the chord of course, remains the same.

Am Dm E7 Am (x2)
A Dm G C F Dm E7
Repeat 4 times.

Hubert I listened to what you have there too... nice finger picking.

Also... let me know if my .wav files play for you in Windows Media Player... I suspect there might be a problem.
