I like the idea of doing a colab with the musicians we have here at ba.com. The idea came up in my 'Calling all musicians' thread where is became obvious (again) that we seem to have a good number of musically inclined people here. And so...

- Who'd like to get in on this, and
- What song shall we do (cover or original)?

This could be a lot of fun. Basically if you have the means to create a .wav file of decent audio quality you could participate. Now before I (we) get into details and logistics let's first get an idea of the interest in doing it.

For starters Tom's in (as indicated in that other thread) and so am I. Who else?

Hey Keith, I'd like to contribute but after reading your other thread it looks like you guys are all pros and totally outclass me. But I can make a .wav file. I guess you could trash any contribution I might make if it wasn't up to snuff. So, count me in electric/acoustic guitar, bass, banjo, harmonica, vocals, and tuba. Oh, I've been playing since the 70s, done public performances mostly with the acoustic and singing as part of Christian ministry, but not as a pro.

You got me beat preacher!

I dont do covers well unless someone wants to tell me the four chords to repeat for verse and the ones for chorus.

I'm just a bass player, but if ya are thinking passing around a wave file for contribution. I think I can get in on this if ya want. We could record the song and put together a video made up of members, rides, and bikes from here on BA.com for you tube. Do It all by e-mail.

I can play "smoke on the water" on the spokes of my 72 bonny, probably not a good thing though....I love to play some Scorpions (Still Loving You)on my Ibanez, as it's only 3 chords, but my boss dropped his end of a 400 pound 717 elevator as we were putting it in the shipping box, which caught my wedding band nearly separating my ring finger at the 2nd joint. Very bloody, and I was told to NEVER wear the ring at work again...Finger may or may not ever be the same as far as playing, but that is probably a GOOD thing if you've ever heard me play!

Well it only takes 2 fingers to play most of the scorps rythms. If your ring finger is not able to play,, use your pinky!

My two fav scorps songs were / are ROCKY YOU LIKE A HURRICANE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZzhNy7Rdqk and Loving You Sunday Morning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwaNcNRjprU
OH yea my 10 yr old has a flyinv V just like the black and white one in the vids. (cool, I get to play it! LOLOL)

yo I'd love to just have misc. posts to links like "heres a bass line, do something with it". Then you post your guitar line with the bass line and post it here. Then someone else takes it and sticks a piece on. and so on.

I can do a mix or two for you guys. Something quick, gimme your tracks I'll load and mix it. Other's interested in audio engineering can do their mixes..and so on..aaha

Sure, ok, i'll give it a try. I've been playing guitar since '62. Played professionally (getting paid) since i was in high school. Played on the road. I don't claim to be God's gift to guitar playing, but i have had my moments and opened for several major acts. So, i'm in if it looks like it won't be clusterf*ck.

I think Keith should write an original tonic type of chord progression or riff for either the chorus or verse. Being it was his idea. JMHO.

I was thinking about finding a site we could use for this project. Okay, I've had some thoughts on this potential project and have still to figure out all the logistics. Obviously it is TOTALLY possible, many have done it so all we have to do is find out how it's been done in the past.

We can't just send a .wav file and have the next person add to it, them pass it on and so on. Doing that would give us zero control over the mix and quality would suffer. Instead we need each musician to record on separate .wav files. After that one of us (I'll volunteer) would need too do the mix down by placing each .wav file in its own track. So... how do we do that?

I also have this idea that one of us could start with a musical phrase or two then pass that on to the next person. The next person listens to it and adds to it, perhaps completing a verse. The next person might add a chorus. The next a verse. The next might think, "hey... a bridge between the verse and chorus would sound awesome," and add that. Someone else might come up with lyrics, or part of the lyrics. In other words it would be cool just to send something out there and have it evolve into something of it's own.

That is just an idea... just thinking out loud. On the other hand we could start with a complete structure, then add our own instrumentation, vocals and so on. We would still need lyrics though, so maybe we could decide ahead of time what that song would be about.

Chime in with your own ideas, or maybe you know someone who's already done this and we can get some tips to make this work. Thanks to everyone who's shown interest... I think we can have a lot of fun with this!

Takamine makes a nice guitar and that one looks terrific! Congratulations!! Glen Hansard plays one, considered to be the hardest working guitar ever!

And although Mike and I just hijacked this thread, I'd love to get it back on track and discuss the next phase of this interesting project!

Keith, I really think the audacity idea would work. I agree though that we need a starting point. Definatly decide what tempo / genra of tune?or if there is a split, two different ones. OOH hey teams!

i am thinkin blues like or country maybe country rock, or something like that, something with a tempo, no head banger tunes for me though i am afraid :-)

problem with wave files etc is that if you do not have a digital board or a sampler on the pc or something you could not layer it or add to it, just play along side of it, then send that file back or pass the two along or something like that, keep in mind i still have reels LOL so i am not entirely up to speed as other might be in this area.

Keith, i could play by the phone as you hit record on your end :-)

Maybe not, but I sure did (I was mostly makin' fun o' me)! Glen Hansard is one o' my favourites!

Let me add another layer of 'something to think about.' What if we video ourselves playing while we add our tracks? What I would suggest is laying down a track sans video, them lip-sync (play along) to the track in a video. Yeah, then we can put it up as a youtube vid.

Well one option is to post your tracks to youtube. Then to get them on your puter track for track convert the youtube with http://www.vidtomp3.com/ then we can all get the same drum and rhythm track. To do this we (Ill volunteer for this) would set up a sort of community membership. call it??? whatever we want, and then I would send the password/connected e-mail to all the participants. We would be free to upload (I can start another post to tell how to create a song w/ out vid to youtube.)at will, play around with the tracks, then send you our track to add to what ever the master track would be.

Hows that sound? Best all pourpose Idea I can think of.

Ed,

I suggested this to Keith already, here is a simple mixer and way to record tracks that works on PC and MAC alike. Plus its FREE
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Oh and Keith if your reading this,,,, maybe on the song selection the teams idea would work. For the guys who may want to lean to the more metal side of stuff? but im down with country blues rock also

Sounds good Scott... as long as you're confident this method won't compromise audio quality which is why I've been suggesting .wav files.

Eventually I'd like to see a ba.com youtube channel for all of us to show off music, bikes, scenery, rides, drink recipes, events, rallies and so on. YEAH, A bonnevilleamerica.com youtube channel!!

It's okay... you can thank me later for THAT one!!!

Well there is an option for higher quality conversions,,says it takes 10x longer. So Here is another option. We use the vids to put something together with, then record Our part we want to do as a wave, using the other stuff as a backing track, and then send you a good .wav to actually use.

For S&G's a person could then post his addition to youtube so we all know what is building.

I guess that would be a logical name! LOLOLOL I guess there is a FB for us also so ,,,, Ill let you (and FJ) know as soon as I get a chance to build it.

The FB site does a good job of hosting VIDS for everyone bike related,,but I guess it wont hurt anything to have another option.

I guess I need to make a e-mail list of everyone involved so we dont clog up BA.COM w/ questions back and forth.

I would like to know who likes to record what type of music.

I wish I had the know how to start a server, that would be the best solution.

man if anyone was to invest in the "next big website" idea. this is it. Have an interface with a metronome and means of collecting files among screen names and trade.

Another option I was thinking of....What if I set up a click track and post it to this site

http://www.wikiupload.com/

like 4 minutes at 100bpm, something. The person downloads the file, plays it on their computer while recording their take. Then they upload their track to the same site. Ive been doing this type of recording a lot lately.

Means of recording is more important than skill at this point. Also having each track queued at zero and in time is crucial. We can worry about quality when we get the system down.

If anyones looking for means to record a quick track $100 gets you a decent field recorder like this. I just bought one a few months ago to record quick riffs here and there around the house. Quality is amazing for the price.

anyone know of an mp3 site or some website that we can all upload tracks to and download from FOR FREE?

The wave file thing is the right idea. I have a friend who has a pro-tools studio who will mix it for us. All we have to do is send him some wave files that he can down load. I have already asked him if he would do it.

I pretty much volunteered for that. I have a full studio setup with all kinds of goodies including Cubase for recording and mixing.
