...so said the rattler as he eyed the sleek 09 America. In my part of Texas, it is wise to heed the old Texas Mantra "If it doesn't stick, sting or bite - its a rock." At least be aware of where you put your foot down - even in your garage.

he's already dead, right? cause I would have hacked his head off instantly with a shovel instead of grabbing the camera

Wow ... so has he come in to find a place to hibernate for the winter? You might wanna be a bit cautious opening any luggage or cartons you have stored in the garage.

While we have plenty of snakes in WNC the only fatal snake bite I recall was a patient brought into the ER one night when I was working. I believe it was 1985. The patient was a Christian fundamentalist snake handler. Seems he held a rattler up to his throat and...(I don't want to spoil it)... it bit him. Right dead square into the jugular vein. It went as you'd expect.
Apparently he wasn't a true believer. I kinda see it a Darwin's work. That part of the herd definitely needed thinning.
A family member of another patient asked the church goers if they brought in the snake. They had and gave it to him. He returned a few minutes later with what looked like a couple pounds of scallops in a tupperware dish. Nice looking meat.

Many years ago, when I worked for Rock Island Railroad, I had to work on a piece of on track equipment while out in the middle of nowhere. Young, disgusted by my misfortune and eager to get moving, I tossed my toolbox on the ground next to a broken brush cutter and swung myself down to get to work. The ground felt decidedly squirmy and as I looked down I noticed I had sat on a rattlesnake. Luckily for me, I had first thrown my toolbox on it's head. The snake had likely been sunning himself in the midmorning springtime sun when I rudely tossed a metal tool box onto his head and then sat on his body. I came out of there as if fired from a cannon. I then fired up the brush cutter and used the blades to chop the snake into several pieces and fling my tools up to 100 feet. Since then I have occasionally felt a bit guilty about the incident. The snake had done nothing to me when I attacked it and sat on it. Then, embarrassed by my panic, I used a diesel powered hydraulically driven set of steel blades to chop him to pieces from the safety of the machine's cab. At the time I thought he must have been eight or nine feet long. In reality he was likely similar to the one in the picture. Fortunately the incident was not captured on film. My co-worker's laughter as he told and retold the story for the next year was bad enough.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Nah, their pretty common, I usually don't even kill em, I bag em and relocate. This one however, did have a life altering experience shortly after the photo. I have a friend that uses, tans, and works their leather for holsters, belts and the like.
Now, my wife on the other hand still gets a little excited. One thing though, I remember watching some nature program a while back where they stated that rattlers were evolving to not rattle as a result of Rattler Round-ups. Don't know about that, but this one did not rattle, even after the first strike to his head. Usually, as soon as your walking up to them they are on it, this guy - silent.

Oh good god...now I don't want my wife going in the garage! Fortunately the only snakes sighted at my house were some little brown harmless ones - one of them in the living room in the middle of the night. Our beagle started barking her ass off at it (probably trying to figure out how to eat it, damn chowhound), wife woke me up and all I heard was "...snake!...living room..." and a half second later I was up and aiming a .40 at it - not wearing a stitch I might add. I like snakes...but not happy about the thought of dangerous ones getting in the house around the wife and kids.

Christian fundamentalist snake handler...........there is nothing fundamentaly Christian about those snake handlers. Billy Graham is a fundamentalist christian.
The guy in the story here deserved what he got for being stupid though.

Not my description. It's how they described themselves. Lots of people have a variety feelings about Billy Graham and his relationships with snakes, too, and he's a local.

That would scare the living daylights out of me. Most snakes in my area are non poisonous, there are a few poisonous ones but not many, but regardless. If I see it, I kill it.

i remember when i was out west on my bike and stopped at a rest area to wiz, get a smoke and wet the whistle. went into the mens room and discoverd his cousin lying on the floor, i remember thinking "is this real?" and when he rattled i didnt have to ask myself again. needless to say i did my buisness (cleaned my pants hahaha) out behind the building and left. I DONT LIKE SNAKES!!! when i was younger and mowing lawns was a source of income and i would see a snake in the yard i would intentionaly run over it but i have since learned there are good snakes and there are bad snakes and i now figure if i leave them alone maybe they will just go away and leave me alone. but, in my garage?? dead snake!!!!!
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!
