There is a tutorial in the Tech Vault on making your own, but the price doesn't seem completely outrageous.

Yes I have one and I find it very comfatable and I have not had any back pain since I started using it. It is very easy to install and second to remove if you want to take it off.

Just tried out my new backrest which arrived today for my '06 America.
It is really good, got to be the best accessory I have bought so far and I would certainly recommend it.
As shades said it is really easy to install and take off - though not sure why you would want to take it off!
With the back supported it also saves having to grip the handlebars so tight when traveling at speed, thus reducing numb fingers as well - bonus!

I had been wanting one of these for awhile, the better half gave me it for Christmas. Easy install, well made, straightens up my posture, great support, comfortable.

Might have too much padding, it seems to push me forward a little. Might just be a matter of getting used to it.
