I have a intermittent misfire on the left cylinder. It has
no consistent factors. Sometimes it runs perfectly, and sometimes it will momentarily misfire. Any thought would be greatly appreciated

Hey Eric... sorry to hear about the misfire you're experiencing. You registered sometime back so maybe you've looked at some threads here concerning problems similar to yours. Often the culprit in these cases turns is a faulty coil or CDI but not always. When I first got my bike it started misfiring on the left. Not always but when it did, it would misfire or I'd loose the left cylinder altogether. It turned out to be bad connections to the coil. The sleeve connectors were loose and one was barely hanging there. Once I slid the connectors into place (and squeezed the female side tighter with pliers) everything was back to normal.
Something to look into!

Could be you never reset you pick up gap to the new .8mm setting.

Has anyone cured a missing /skipping issue by adjusting the pickup gap to .8mm.? My '02 America has run well for 10 years (until lately) with the factory gap (whatever that is, because I haven't checked it yet) and I'm wondering if checking the gap after ten years would be a waste of gasket material.

I'm pretty sure the gap would not cause his misfire.
But it can be checked easy enough by setting the bike on the sidestand. When cooled down you can easily remove the right cover with only a drip or two of oil. Just place a rag under the cover and you should be set. The gasket is pretty sturdy and if you are careful it is reusable.
The hardest part about it is removing the bottom bolt on the cover. It's snug and you may have to remove the rear brake pedal assembly to get to it. Maybe you can reach it and loosen it out, but there is not enough room to pull it off completely.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

My 05 did the CDI, then a coil, then a CDI then, then, then,  The problem is the CDI acts alot like a coil going bad. If it switches sides then its probably the CDI> Also check the obvious, ground connection on the battery being loose etc. And, as above, the connections to the coil need to be tight. If it gets worse or only comes on when its hot, I am so sorry to tell it is sounds like the CDI then.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

It seems too, that moisture can wreak havoc with our CDIs causing the bike to misfire or die completely.

my buck and a quarter:
NOTE: You only have to loosen the foot control bar and move it forward. This provides sufficient clearance to remove the right engine cover. Careful though as the magnets will snatch the cover out of your hand and if your fat fingers have come between the cover and the engine case and the dreadful snatch occurs...OUCH! Also have some RTV on hand to seal the U shaped grommets before you reinstall the cover. I wish I could have saved my gasket(s). An iffy proposition at best saving the old gasket that is. Better to have one on hand before you remove the cover.

I cut the heads off of some long zinc bolts 6mm ? Use them threaded in, as a guide to slide the cover off and on and resist the magnetic pull. Replace with the correct bolts when the cover is in place. #1 on probably not being able to save the gasket.

Great idea Ryk.
And +1 on having a replacement gasket ready.
Swapping out right & left ignition coils helped isolate the cause when I had the same problem. Never faulted when cold, but never knew when to expect it once it warmed up. Fix was a coil replacement.
