Basically I think you're asking about differences between the Speedmaster and America, taking the Bonneville completely out of the equation, right? (Some confusion may be in the fact that the first year for the America it was called the 'Bonneville America.')
As for shortening the gears on the America it's just matter of changing a sprocket.
