Actually, nowadays they have a gun that spot-welds pins onto the metal and the slide hammer attaches to the pins. When finished pulling the pins just grind off. It's a pretty slick tool but you still need to take the piece down to bare metal first. I'd try the dry ice method or paintless dent repair folks first.
