Yes they do. They monitor the mixture in the headers (in closed throttle position only) and the computer turns on the AI when the exhaust mix is too rich for the atmosphere greenies. If they are not turned off when the AI is disabled then the computer is trying to fix a mix but nothing changes (because the AI is disconnected) and so it keeps trying.

Correct. You'll just get annoying clicks as the AI air pump turns on and off. But it's harmless. The resistor to replace the air pump is an easy mod.
