Stewart your going to find as many different opinions about camera's as you do about politics. Go on line find your price range, go to the store pic one up and see if it feels good. Some here like Nikon I like Canon and have both. A dslr with a couple of decent lenses is going to take awesome pictures, regardless of manufacture! If your not worried about macro or zoom the point and shoots take great pictures, it's all subjective.
