Hi everyone, this is my first post to the forum. I recently got my first bike, a 2006 America. I took it for my first long ride last weekend and can't wait to get back out again. Anyways, I went riding with a friend who has a HD. With them side by side i noticed that the heat shield on the exhaust on the HD was overlapped for the length of the pipe. However, on the America there is a 2"-3" gap at the beginning of the horizontal section of the exhaust. It seems to be the standard from what i can see on other Americas, I was just curious about what the reason for this is if any?

Thanks everyone

I'm guessing it's a money thing. Manufacturers cut corners where they can so if they figure it didn't really need to be there, they didn't spend the extra money it took to put it there. Maybe it just went better with the flow of the pipes.
At least yours has a cover over that elbow.. the early productions were just bare pipe.

The shields overlap, hiding the pipe joints on my 2010. My wife's 2007 Speedmaster has the gap you describe.

Close but no cigar. I think Chy is talking about the elbow where the header bends to the bottom frame alignment. Look closely at a 2002 to see the difference. This area was left uncovered, or here in the deep south "nakked" in 2002.
Also on the 2002 the lower triple tree was unpolished. I believe those are the only differences in 2002 and 2003.
Also in mid 2003 models the Bonneville America was changed to America. My early 2003 is a Bonneville America.
Someone chime in if I'm overlooking something.

Does that bother ya? At all or are ya just curious?
It may be that they left that area to allow for some of the heat to escape. Maybe. I only wonder if it bothers ya because if its an aesthetic problem there may be a way to cover it. If its just a curiosity then I will not bother looking for a cover.

I think it's that way because TRIUMPH made them that way. That's how they wanted it to look.
