Now explain why your first name is "Myke" instead of "Mike."

Yeah "Myke"! I mean it's not like you're from that little island off the coast of Europe where they misspell the word "tire" all the time too, ya know!!!

The problem there Dwight is they have used the language long before we began as a nation . So who is in fact misspelling words here?

I'm sorry sir, but I must disagree. The 'merican language is truly the abuse of several languages. Those fellows "across the pond" merely abuse there own.

I must agree with Chad here, we not only destroy the English Language in the US but parts of several others too. The younger generation to the worst degree I have seen yet.

Now WAIT a second here, Ian!!! Is THIS coming from the very same guy who I'm presently talkin' to in my "Indian or Norton" thread and who wants to "destroy" a perfectly good looking and handling new "BRITISH Cafe Racer-ish" Norton motorcycle and then "chop" or "customize" it so that it looks more "AMERICAN Cruiser-ish"?????

Well, as you probably know, Chad, the English Language is one of the few languages which has been and continues to be in constant flux, adding words from other languages and other cultures throughout its history, and thus is why it is a language with few absolute "rules" regarding its spelling and structure.
(...and which makes my constant little "ribbing" about it, most often directed toward our British "cousins" over there, so much fun for me)

Yep Dwight not only do we infuse words from other languages. We adulterate them as well. I really am curious as to how the 'merican language is going to transform between now and when I'm an old dinosaur shaking my cane at people on the street. I wonder if I'll be that guy who says back in my day we called that ............. And we had ...................... it was tougher, hotter, colder, and better.

'Gran Torino' , thats a great movie. With me its a lever action Winchester 30-30, or the ole Remington 870 wingmaster.

Clint lowered that rifle a bit early there though. Those punks could have hopped in the car and had guns in the car then opened fire before Clint could have brought the rifle back up.

well FJ since you asked and if you must know, my mother came up with the spelling as Mykel when i was born but the hospital wouldnt do it that way and told her she was spelling it wrong. she put up a good fight but lost in the end, so on paper its correct Michael, but to my mother it will always be Mykel. my mother has always been a bit ahead of the curve or some would say progressive not in a political way but just in a sensical sort of way. she has always excepted the ways of my childhood and understood the experimenting that a child or teen might live thru and accepted it. my teachers in school for the most part let me spell it that way, oh there were some that barked but when i would tell them its what my mother wants they would usually let it go. funny thing is, her mother came here from Ireland and always called me Mickey hahahaha and some people wonder whats wrong with me hahahahahaha i only use the "correct" spelling on important documents but have used my mothers spelling for just about everything else. hope that clears that up for you and Dwight
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Hmmmm..."Ireland" ya say, huh Myke! Well, ya see, I was RIGHT, wasn't I?! Yep, I KNEW there had to be some sort of British Isles connection there. (...and yep folks, the Republic of Ireland IS geographically part of the British Isles, but is NOT part of the U.K.)

Yeah, but why? Why Mykel? Why saddle you with that odd spelling for your entire life? I don't get it. Every single time you give someone your name you have to spell it for them. It's bad enough most of us have spell our last names all the time. I guess the fragmentation of the namescape is a pet peeve of mine. Pretentious parents trying to make their little bundle of joy special or different out of the gate, I suppose. Last year I met a Mechille (yes, pronounced "Michelle") and I wanted to hunt her parents down and smack them.

Oh, oh, OH! Then there's my friend Michael, who, upon hearing that his wife gave birth to a daughter rather than a son, added an A to his name (I sh*t you not) and christened her "Michaela" pronounced Mikayla (or one of the other gajillion spellings of THAT name). He was adamant that he didn't just add the a to his own name but I think he's full of crap. Narcissism.

Well, if we're going onto real names, I get annoyed when people assume that I can't spell Bryan And then there's all the variations that people make when attempting to spell my name, even when copying it off a form I've filled in There is a few people who get my name, and I tell which ones they are cos they usually say something aling the lines of "Oh, you're Welsh then" to which I reply "No" As for narcissism, you could say that I took my name and mixed it up and stuck an 'o' in it to get my daughters name Robyn

Back in the late 80's and early 90's, I played for a fast-pitch softball team in Thomasville. I always wore my SF Giants hat instead of the team's hat during games as my own little rebellion (and to piss off all the Braves fans around here), so some of my teammates started calling me Will the Thrill (after Will "the Thrill" Clark, the Giants' sweet-swinging first baseman back then). The name's stuck, and some people still call me that. When I signed up on here, I thought the name fit pretty good for a motorcycle site. By the way Lee, we used to play a few times a year in Cherokee, as well as in Morganton and Shelby. There were some good players on those teams, and those road trips were always a good time. Will

P.S Two days following my visits to the Bedouins, I got held up and the sh!t beaten out of me by a group of Touaregs ... but that's a story for another time.
It would be interesting if you had marked on the map where you caught your beat down.
Why, you thinking of passing through that way? (just kidding! )
It was in the border area just beyond Zagora (see circle) going into Algeria. The border was unmarked in those days (late '88) so I couldn't very much tell if I had crossed it but probably had. The Touaregs were apparently patrolling the area (there were many territorial disputes back then) and were pretty far from their normal settlements. The locals called them "pirates of the desert" as I later was told. I had already pretty much figured that out as they had taken my 2 cameras (one cheapo and one good one). It was one of the few times on my travels I have gotten into such a jam and have said (and believed it) that "Thanassis, this is your last day on this earth". Oh, and by the way, I was aiming for "Interstate nr 2 - " as marked on the map, which headed more or less due south.
