So the other night we were watching some western movie on tv. In the movie a guy sends a telegram. As always when they send telegrams in movies, they say "stop" at the end of every sentence... most of the time.

My soon to be step-daughter, asked me what does "stop" mean. I had to think, I have no idea. So, I told her that they said that instead of adding a period to the end of every sentence. Was I right? What is the story behild saying "stop" what does it really mean?

Soren,

I think Sam Morse's code didn't include any punctuation marks, so they ended up having to use that word[stop] to designate the end of a sentence.

Cheers,
Dwight
(now you just KNEW I couldn't end this response o' mine without a "joke", RIGHT?......OKAY........

No, we're not going to "invade" Iran, we (and probably the Israelis) are going to nuke it! (And my guess it that this will start the Biblical endtimes war.)

WOW Dwight, That's almost a prayer !
If that happened, the entire human race that is, we'd probably see something.
But as far as God "allowing" us to blow ourselves up, we'd have to get into a discussion on predestination, corrupt human nature and free will. That's really pretty deep theological water though, and perhaps not the best subject for this forum.

SORRY...but just ONE MORE observation!!!

I THINK I know WHY this here thread turned into yet ANOTHER sorry excuse for one o' my tiring and tedious (semi-)tirades about the dangers of Organized Religion........

It was BOUND to HAPPEN, SEE!

What WERE those first few lines Samuel Morse sent via that wire back in the nineteenth century, ANYWAY?!!!

OH YEAH......"What hath GOD wrought"!!!

Cheers,

People would save money by using the word “stop” instead of periods to end sentences because punctuation was extra, the four character word was free stop

Around here, it would be more appropriate to have one that says, "still on the track" , as that's a much more rare occurrence .

Now I thought that we had burned this bridge , and that you understood that the offensive part (to me at least) was the stereotyping of Christians by the national media (both liberal and conservative) as a bunch of witch burning Crusaders. I blame the media because they give so much coverage to the anti-christs who claim to speak for Jesus. There are plenty of Christians who do not agree with Buchannan or Robertson or any of their ilk, and do so publicly, yet try to find them on the news. So your saying that nobody seems to listen to Jesus has to be based on media controlled perceptions and not reality.

No you won't . And that's O.K. , it gives me a chance to offer some edification to those who don't understand Christians.
And perhaps to those Christians who don't understand Jesus.

Bill,

Geez MAN! With this seriousness you've brought into the equation here....YOU'RE RUINING MY TIMING, BUDDY!!!

BUUUUTTTT, I know, you know, that WHENEVER I insert that "christian gibe" stuff into the conversations around here, I'm referring to the FUNDAMENTALIST aspect of it or ANY other religious thought or deeds that spring from a STRICT and INTOLERATE interpretation of any AND ALL Scriptures.

THAT to me IS and WILL BE the BANE of HUMANITY until the end of time.(Which PapaDean evidently thinks is right around the corner)

Dwight

D*mn Friar Man....I KNEW you could do it! You're the BEST, dude!

Now....I don't want to "DWELL"(a reference to Bill's strobe timing-light thing above....BTW Bill, GOOD ONE!) BUT....I'm wondering IF this new dialect of the English Language known as "Dwightish", is very dependent on the use of PARENTHESES(I've got a sneaky suspicion that it IS, for some reason...BUT...if I'm WRONG...PLEASE let me know, OKAY?!!)

AND....seeing as how Sam Morse's code had no ability to send punctuation(of which I believe a parenthesis IS considered...but I could be wrong here)....can you imagine how freakin' hard it would have been for me to send a telegram back in the day, and have it still make sense.(yeah...I KNOW...I usually don't make much sense around here anyway...RIGHT???!!!)

Cheers,

Holy Dots and Dashes Batman, You are right. It would have been tough for either one of us (not that would ever use parenthesis in the middle of a sentence to insert another thought) to send a telegram.

Just when you seemed to be going for jugulars, become softer and - gasp - more tolerant. Tragic as it may be to admit, all religion is superstition and the only difference between a caveman sacrificing a wombat to the thunder gods and modern-day religions is that folks have become smarter at trying to rationalize what are irrational beliefs.

Of course, special scorn should be reserved for the New Agers, who can use the most sophisticated semi-mystical, quasi-scientific, linguistic mumbo-jumbo to convince the unthinking that "harmonic crystal energies at the quantum level can generate fields of consciousness, which lead - when properly channeled - to an harmonious oneness with the spiritual universe." Bah, humbug and poppycock. Anyone who believes this sort of mindless clap trap deserves to lose their money to a grasping guru charging $35 a pop for some wishy-washy, insipid, turgid, self-help tome that is only good for smacking the witless over the head with.

But apart from that, I'm pretty much OK with most people

Siggy

If life wasn't so pointless and absurd, I would take it more seriously.
