Try cotton balls.
I use normal earplugs when shooting and experience the same pain you do. But for riding, I take a cotton ball, rip off a piece just big enough to fit tightly in my ear canal(but not too small either, you don't want it to get lost in there). I find this provides all of the noise protection I need but without the pain.
It also allows me to hear what I need to hear.
That is a great suggestion. I've gone on 2 rides using the cotton balls for ear protection and couldn't be happier. Used them with my new Arai RX-Q full face helmet and had no pain in the ears after each ride. Sound deadening is adequate and with the full face protection, riding in our cooling Canadian temperatures was pure pleasure.
