It's hard to overcome the mentality of those who believe in the "Don't rise above your raising" mentality. Why are some parents afraid of encouraging their children to live a better life than they did? And what can be done to change it? At least in the US, it seems like the first few generations of immigrants push their children to achieve, but later generations become complacent.
I should probably stop before I start a rights vs. responsibility debate.
I am sure it happens but have never witnessed it. I wouldn't be able to understand or tolerate it either. The most I have witnessed is people who know more about football or their motorcycle or what ever the case may be than they know about their kids. I guess more neglect than suppression. Either way its totally fubar.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.
