+1 My sister and mom are teachers (mom retired from private school teaching) I think in addition to this they need to change the retirement package. Not sure about the rest of the country but here a public school teacher gets 100% of their pay as retirement unlike my mom who had to save like most of the rest of us. They could then put that money they save to the students or to keep property taxes at bay. Taxes are extremely high where I live.

As for private vs public pay, my sister makes more than my mom did and it really is higher than it needs to be since she can afford $400 boots while supporting her 2 kids alone. I won't post what she makes but it is close to 3 times what I do. Over paid is a matter of perspective, I think if the programs don't suffer and people are not being forced into foreclosure then they are not over paid at any rate if they do a good job. If programs suffer and property taxes are through the roof then pay should be cut to a more reasonable level and they should have to save for retirement like the rest of us.
