Thats why I never ride my bike in China town.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

OHMYGOD! I thought the cement truck was bad till the end. They straight run people over to kill and don't stop till the rear wheels are clear of the body. That was horrific!

That's crazy, a couple of those big trucks you can actually see the wheels go over the persons body and a couple cases head. Fatal for sure.

Wow, the people crossing the streets don't look any more than the drivers. Then they just keep driving. Unbelievable.

Quite shocking. It looks like human life has little value. From what I hear, industry and manufacturing in China is equally lethal - no health and safety requirements. Employees are required to handle toxic chemicals and operate dangerous equipment without any protection (ie, welding without welding masks).
The western corporates need to take some of the responsibility for this when they get China to manufacture their products.

I was complaining to a Canadian I met about the TERRIBLE standard of Driving in Thailand. He'd just come from China and reckoned the Thais knew how to drive compared to the Chinese! I thought he was crazy. Now after watching the clip that Ed posted I know what he was talking about!

Maybe it's because most of them are too short to see over the steering wheel?

When you let population run completely out of control, human life seems to hold less value ....becomes more expendable....rules don't seem to matter as much.... WTF?!!!

My [Educated as far as Thailand is concerned]guess, is they have rules but also have massive corruption, so a pitifully small by our standards, bribe will get you out of almost all offenses. So no one follows, or cares about, road rules.

That's the price that has to be paid for cheap products so that profits remain high. I won't even pick on Wal-mart as all major retailers are equally guilty of selling slave produced goods.
And it's way more than just China. Practically every "developing" country with a totalitarian form of government uses slave labor to make products for export.
Some companies that move production to foreign countries actually raise the standard by paying a living (for the area) wage and improving conditions for the workers.
Do a little research before you buy. Support Fair Trade companies and boycott slavers.
And so it's not a total highjack:
Except for the language, it looks a bit like Vegas traffic, especially in the tourist corridor on weekend nights

China... Back in the day of the internet's infancy, used to be that I would let accommodations to hughes employees. One day I was told of how China could give a rats arse about human life. Basically the way I recall their tale was that they had prepped a satellite for flight. Then while watching the lift off, they observed the rocket malfunction and change course to earthbound, striking a village on the other side of the valley. The launch was from one mountain and crashed into the mountain across the way...Well today, when internet access is old hat, I looked up what the quasi official story was, Quote:
Xichang Space Launch Center offers better access to geostationary orbits than Jiuquan. It was built 40 miles north of Xichang City in 1978. Its first launch was in 1984. Xichang launches Long March space rockets. The local population lives near the launch pads. When the first Long March 3B rocket crashed in 1996 on a hillside a mile from the launch pad, six persons were killed and 57 injured. When a Long March 2E exploded in 1995, debris killed six and injured 23 in a village five miles downrange.
The hughes boys conveyed the total lack of Chinese concern for human life to me that day. Dang. 15 years later I confirm what I had heard first hand.
Another big difference in mindsets is evident from the lack of the term, 'Clean Room' in the Chinese space flight lexicon.
What strikes me about the flick this thread addresses is the prevalence of traffic cameras in China. Wow. I thought we had the market cornered here in the good ole, big brother, US of A. When it reality it is apparently another example of us catching up with the mindset of those that ... oops eminent aup violation...
Happy Sunday!

Well, moe, this is cultural, so as long as it's not political, religious or racist, it's not a violation.
Remember this is a country where you have to apply to have children, are limited to one unless you're rich enough to bribe the right people, and for the longest time would drown female children because they weren't seen as valuable as males.
Life is cheap. They've got several billion to squander.
Also, WTF is up with the Pirates of the Caribbean music in this video? ARAAARGH MATEY!

Well, all I can say here is that it sure is a good thing that stuff like what happened in that above video sure can never happen in the Western World. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7mkvciSXM0Yep sorry. There I go bein' all contrary again around here, huh?! (...btw, one final note here...any pedestrian ANYWHERE in the world who while walking in a crosswalk fails to check the oncoming traffic, DESERVES to get their dumb ass run over!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

A lot of those look like police chases. The rest are clueless or driving distracted. That's a bit different than the china video. Not sure I could say that any of them look intentional.
I was just commenting yesterday when driving my dad around the state that we used to see billboards that said don't drink and drive. Now they all say don't drink and text.

I learned a little but ago that flashing red-light signals here now means, "slow down and keep going, especially when making a left turn and there is a motorcycle in the intersection". People have no clue about four way stops anymore (especially when the signal lights are out).

WELCOME TO MY WORLD!
(Sorry Dwight, I couldn't help it)
I guess this is just a pure representation of the Darwin awards. Most don't care about traffic laws, don't look while crossing, whenever you are driving along a main road, if a car or bike turns right from a crossing lane in front of you, you never see their faces, only the back of their heads, everybody is looking in the direction they are going, not to the incoming traffic.
My beef is when reckless driving takes innocent lives. I don't mind when a stupid moron croaks for doing something really stupid (hence the Darwin awards), but when it also takes the lives of the innocents, I get furious.
There is a (terrible) joke going around truck drivers.... If they hit someone, they will back up and run them over again because it is cheaper and easier to pay a one time fee for killing someone, than having to pay an injured for the rest of its life.
