Actually that wasn't entirely the reason - I had planned to do the NE part of the US in 2003, but due to a delay in starting the trip, I didn't have time to fit it all in before I had to go to the sourthern hemisphere. I could maybe have detoured up there in 2004 but found in 2003 that things start to get quiet ( and colder ) after Labor Day.

Actually its Pigeon Forge that we don't mention, not Gatlinburg. (It still písses me off seven years later!!)
