I heard someone say they are getting their taxes back as they were looting some poor blokes store. If that is what it is about then I fail to see why they are setting fire to peoples property and stealing from businesses who are probally struggling themselves. What is wrong with them??

Just imagine this happening in Houston or Fort Worth. 
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. This is a tricky one to analyse properly( and I'm 35 miles away in rural Kent) but here are some elements which occur to me...
1. There is a bitter legacy amongst some sections of our population from years gone by and a continuing belief amongst many black and ethnic minority citizens that our police unfairly target them....whether or not this is stiil true is hard to say, but its there.
2. the economcic downturn is hitting poorer people hardest whilst they see those who caused the downturn continuing to make large profits .
3.There are real problems here about some young people's worship of gang culture.
4. Add all that to the mix when the police shoot someone and you have a recipe for violence.
Having said all that by way of understanding tensions, there still has to be something badly wrong somewhere where the local population seem outraged by a shooting by the police, but apparently unconcerned about alleged gang members riding around the neighbourhood carrying guns( we have a complete ban on the possession of handguns in the UK)

I am glad we are taking this seriously especially as we have brother members living there. Hoping they remain safe through it all. One of our greatest allies has its citizens being placed in serious danger, suffering damage to their homes and belongings.
The immense pressure now on the government not to overreact.
It is a very sad state of affairs and not the time to work in the UK as a law enforcement officer. Imagine the possibility of a mistaken identity and the tragedy to follow.

I saw a headline that gangs were using smart phones to coordinate looting? Sounds like capitalizing on all those factors Al mentioned to cash in a bit and stage a crime spree.

Yea your too nice about it. If the victims of these crimes would just shoot into the crowd of criminals. They could accomplish two things; decrease the surplus population, and educate the survivors.
Notice I said victims as in citizen victims, not the already heavy handed jack booted thugs. The more rights a citizen has the less the government has. In effect making the individual more independent and free he is.

Houston is the 4th largest city in the US but has one of the lowest violent crime rates. There is a reason.

San Antonio is the 7th largest I think and we have a pretty high rate. We have a lot of guns too!
National statistics for Plano Texas put them in the top 10 cities for all types of crime including arson and car theft.
This type of thing could and does happen everywhere there is a big class separation. It is not right but it sure is dangerous.

Just looked on the new york times top 10 deadliest cities in America for 2010 Houston was not on it. Neither was SanAntonio.

I was born in Chester Pa., lived many years in Wilmington De. and most family is from the Camden N.J. area. I am lucky to be alive!
Yes there are much more violent places than Houston.

According to CQ press Houston has the 45 highest crime rate in the country not bad for being the 4th largest city.

These riots are just scum using any excuse to have a go at the police and indulge in a bit of theft. If we are going to politicize this ( we aren't because that would violate the AUP) you could argue that 13 years of Labour have removed any means of giving a sense of right and wrong to children who now feel free to do just as they please.

Hey, my son fell in the Riverwalk once! He was only one puke and two staggers to the wind at the time.
I think the point is that this type of violence can happen anyplace. There is not a good formula to know when it will happen or how long it will last. That is the scary part. It is hard to prevent and hard to prepare or plan for it.

(...ya know, one can never trust that lousy Wikipedia to give us the "real story"...in fact, I'll betcha those folks at Wiki are all probably members of the city of Los Angeles' Chamber of Commerce, and are just tryin' to make Houston look bad in comparison!!!)

Exactly, Ron! That was pretty much my point. Stuff like these losers goin' nuts and doing stuff counter-productive to their own interests can, and DO happen EVERYWHERE on this crazy friggin' planet!
(...and whenever I read or hear from somebody that this kinda crap "won't happen around where I live" because of "reason a, b or c", then I find it almost impossible to refrain from taking the contrary viewpoint...because of exactly what you just said up there!)

Well my take on this is. People seem to have no respect for authority now. Look at schools .A kid gets told off the parents are up the school kicking of big time at the teachers. Vid games and films another thing. Lot of this kids think this is like playing on a X box's. But more fun to do it for real. But this is the main thing. At the moment most are getting away with it as the police haven't been able for different reason's to stop them .So while they can they will just go out and have fun (in there eyes) Some of reasons are. Man power,They have not been given right equipment, PC and not wanting to been seen as going over the top. With regard to gangs .Well they have stop fighting each other and join together to take on the police. The police have to start arresting people Just to show that they cant get away with it. Maybe if they used water canons,bullets that stain clothes and people. They wont like getting there design gear messed up and you will be able to tell for while who was involved.Soon stop if they start getting hurt a bit.Soon find out its not a vid game. They have cancelled most of the football match's including England's friendly. So they have enough police to deal with it all. Lets hope they do deal with it. Atb geoff

I may have strange perspective as I live/work one side of the Atlantic but my wife/home is on the other, but I can definitely say this would not happen in the US, for two reasons (one opinion, one fact)
1) First the opinion: the majority of those rioting are not tax paying, law abiding citizens but those that think hand outs are a right and the country owes them something. This is not a function of 'class' (there are as many white as blue collar youths involved)
2) The normal citizens in the US would have stepped up and stopped it; and here the issue isn't the normal citizens. I have just phoned home to make sure my wife is OK, she says there are riots expected in our town tonight; at the local store they have been told....if there is a riot, let the rioters do whatever they want, don't confront them, clear up the mess afterwards. So who told them this? The local police!

Nope, BUT you DO know that it is just "human nature" for almost ANYONE to seek out some tidbit of information which might support their contentions, don't ya?! And sometimes even when the source in question might be considered one which even the seeker might think could be questionable or might be slanted in a manner to "prove" the seeker's contentions.
